A RX-7 does NOT have a timing belt. Nor does it have pistons or valves for that matter. It is a ROTARY engine. I'm sorry but you don't have too many options here, but to take it in to a mechanic to have it diagnosed, if you want it fixed. Sounds like you flooded it.

You need to let it sit, or take it to the dealer and have them clear it out.



Alternative.. get someone to pull start you... if it doesnt fire after that, you have bigger problems than I thought..

There are a lot of things that are different about a rotary motor. Could be the apex seals. It could be overheating as the rotary motor is hard to keep cool. It could be your ignotors. Don't know what else to tell you really other than to take it to someone and get them to diagnose it for you and then you can fix it yourself. Most shops will only charge like 50 bucks to diagnose something.

Make sure that the shop is accredited for working on rotarys.

yes, buy the service manual and READ. Every car is unique and the DOHC V-6 of your Ody is much different than your flat 4 in your 'Ru.



I do not recall the timing belt being as SHORT as 60k - a garage might have told you that. BUT, it would not be more than 105k! At 117k, you are on a thread DEPENDING on where you live. Timing belts in the mild weather, humid east coast seem to last very well - my AC belt and Alternator belt on my 95 Ody lasted 100k miles! The dry southwest WILL dry out the belts much sooner.

This is a job best left to a professional. Don't bring it to the Honda dealer... they will get you for about $800 for parts and labor, including a new water pump. We have a 2000 Odyssey and when the water pump went at 130,000 miles I changed the timing belt. I had a local mechanic do it. He used a rebuilt water pump and 3 hours of labor.... got the whole job done for under $400 with some new gaskets, etc, also. I stopped in and took a look while he was doing the work. The clearances are very tight. This is a large engine in a small compartment. Unless you have a lift, I would not attempt this.





By the way, there is probably no rush to replace this belt. The condition of the belt that I took out of my Odyssey was very good. I felt foolish for doing it but I needed the pump anyway and it just made sense to do it. I believe that would be every 62,500 miles your timing belt should be changed by subaru standards. You should get the tensioner and water pump done at the same time too, most dealers would probably charge around $500 for just belt, maybe $700-800 all together for water pump and tensioner.

that car has a chain........and if anything it has stretched........and that is one of the easiest style to change....still requires some work tho....



remove...fan....radiator and hoses if necessary(hoses are radiator usually is) remove water pump......remove timing cover .....remove chain and gears.......replace chain and gears with new chain and gears....make sure its a double roller....most are....

There are usually some marks on the crankshaft and camshaft gear that should line up with marks on the chain. The two dots on the crank and cam should perfectly line up with one another. No harm in removing the cover and having a look.Adjust timing belt on a Car?
Get your self a mechanic that has done this before and save yourself some headaches.



This requires dismantling the engine, including draining the water/anti freeze and taking off water pump, hoses, air conditioning, fan, probably take off or loosen power steering, and taking off the grill and radiator, and so on. And you might need a damper puller to remove the damper.

And then you will need to change your oil, completely, since anti freeze will leak into it when you take the belt cover off.



If you put the chain on wrong, your car may never start. Or you could damage the pistons or valves.

    You made a wise decision to have your car timing belt/water pump changed at the dealership as they are major components. I believe the $900 was well spent and will serve you well for many more years of safe driving. Unless the old belt was loose or slipping, thus possibly causing the valves to open at wrong timings, I don't think you will notice any difference in the car performance after the replacement, especially if it was a preventive maintenance at the recommended mileage. But I do believe you will feel some difference in terms of the engine smoother acceleration and responsiveness.     Here's my answer, not sure it is right, but right for me. After a certain time, I replace my timing belt. I may not always replace my water pump with my timing belt.     It can wait. I did my mom's 01' it had 85K on it and I inspected the belt very well and it had no stress marks at all. I think you should not worry to much. Japanese motors usually blow their timing belts around ++130k. Get ready to spend about $800. Get the water pump done too hopefully you know that it's behind the timing belt and it's better to get it done now. Also replace the thermostat they go bad around 60K get the one from the factory it cost about $25 it's better then the crap at auto zone. It's good that your doing your maintenance most people ignore it completely. If you have any questions fell free I've worked on that car for 7 years now.

    It sounds a little high to me! you can call other shops and ask for an estimate, ask everyone you know for recommendations or ask at some of the auto parts stores for a recommendation for a good honest mechanic!

    You should check your owner's manual for Honda's mileage recommendation. Your timing belt may suggest around 90,000 to 100,000 depending on driving conditions. A new timing belt is about $35 from your local auto parts store.



    Although the timing belt wraps around the water pump pulley, the water pump should be inspected first not replaced without a reason.



    If there are traces of coolant leaking behind the pulley, the water pump should be replaced ($40 from your local auto parts store). If there are traces of coolant leaking along the edges of the water pump gasket, only water pump gasket should be replaced (just $4 from your local auto parts store).



    Since it is more difficult to determine the condition of the timing belt tensioner, it may be a good idea to replace the timing belt tensioner ($60 from your local auto parts store) .



    If express lube charges $500 for this job, then they're pocketing about $365 for labor. I would consider $150 labor charge more reasonable.

    The timing belt might have been loosened hence requires tightening. If regular with your car services, never temper but be punctual as to what is recommended. You must also check the timing belt regulator or fuse! Quick timing belt warning lamp breakdown recovery!!!

    it is harder to change a chain then a belt. if you have a chain, then i will tell you how to do it. first, get everything out of your way, pull the crank pully,pull the damper with a puller, take off the timing cover,put the crank to where the dot on the gear is at 12 oclock, take off the chain and change both the crank and cam gear. before you put the cam gear on, put the chain on the crank gear, then the cam gear. both of the gears should be pointing at 6 and 12 oclock, there,s dots on both gears. after you get the gears and chain on, clean the timing cover up and change the timing seal, put a new timing cover gasket on and bolt it back up, put everything back on, start your car, hook up a timing light and mark it on the timing scale to where it times at, turn the distributor to where the mark is at, and tighten the distributor.How to change a timing chain on a 2000 Chevy Cavalier

    Timing CHAINS are not changed just because of mileage. Timing BELTS are changed just because of mileage.



    Recheck to find if you have a belt or chain. If you have a chain, then that is NOT the problem / source of the noise.

    If it's a 2.7L it is an interference engine meaning if the timing belt breaks while a valve is wide open, it can make contact with the piston causing damage to the piston and or valve.

    First of all, it's not a V4, it's a straight-four (aka I4, inline 4, L4, or four-banger). The four cylinders are aligned in a row, hence the I for inline and not a V for a V formation.

    i resently bought a porsche 944 non-turbo 1985.5 and when i take it to the mechanic he told me that the engine is leaking oil from the crank shaft oil seal im just wondering if i can get any advices form 944 owners or experienced mechanic if the oil is leaking should i change the timing belt and tensioner and get a reseal kit. Too tight is usually bc an inexperienced person or misguided mechanic didn't know what they were doing. Too loose is usually because it wasn't adjusted and maintained, ie neglected.

    It's always good to get it replaced when you're in doing something else, if you don't know the history. If you know its not that old, just make sure someone qualified checks and adjusts the tension on a regular basis (like once/year)

    ---I have some advise that you may not want to hear but you should. You did not make clear if the belt(s) was/were still in tack or not. What you should know is that the engine in these vehicles are probably interference design. This means that to gain the performance and compression ratio the combustion chambers are small and there are very close tolerances.

    The problem is that if a belt, and in most cases one or both of two belts break, the valves almost always make contact with the top of the piston. This also almost always bends several valves on the cylinders affected by a broke timing belt. In a worse case scenario a valve can punch through a piston. The cost of just replacing bent valves are expense. If a piston is punctured the cost is usually more expensive than the vehicle is worth.

    %26quot;If%26quot; the belt(s) is/are not broken and a person makes a very minute error during replacement then the consequences can be for more severe than the cost of letting a shop perform the repairs.

    I would implore you to examine this, find out if you do in fact have an interference designed engine, and consider your options.

    Next month I will have had this car for 4 years. Has not been in the shop even once. I do all minor maintenance (change oil faithfully every 3,500 miles, change air filter every 10,000, change transmission fluid %26amp; filter every 25,000, and change plugs every 25,000, rotate tires every 10,000 miles).



    I know that this may sound excessive for the transmission filter/fluid, and spark plugs, but this is what I do to keep repair bills down. My wife drives this car; gets an average of 33 mph around town, and about (but not quite!) 43 mph on highway.



    I'm still amazed that I have not had to take this car to the dealer or mechanic for ANYTHING since I bought it in July 2004.

    You may call the dealer for the exact mileage... however, I believe those are recommended to be changed around 85-100k miles. Though I will say, our shop does not usually see issues with them until 150-200K miles.

    It has a timing belt. I believe toyota recommends replacing it every 60,000 miles. So...yours is due.

    But you're wasting oil by changing it every 3500 miles. The oil these days can go 5000 to 7500 miles before needing changing. Your dad probably told you to change it every 3500 miles but oil products have come a long way technologically since he was taught that buy your grandfather.

    I worked on Toyots for 9 years. you're doing a fantastic job!! I wish others were like you. Toyotas are pretty indestructable. Oil changes are the most critical...but again, 3500 miles is a little too excessive.

    Belt replacement is a fairly simple process. There are notches (marks) on the Crankshaft pulley, distributor pulley and the valve timing pulley. There are corresponding marks (stripes) on the belt. There was in my time a short instruction sheet included with the new belt, or you need a basic engine manual. It tells you how to release the belt tension, and align the various marks. You should recheck ign. timing with a timing light after the replacement is made. a broken belt, has no effect on the valve train.     You will need to get a repair manual that has a diagram. It will show where all the marks are that you need to line up. Also find out if this engine is an interference or non interference engine. An interference engine will most likely cause damage to the valve train when a belt breaks. The pistons will hit the valves and bend them. If its an non interference engine you will be ok because there is clearance so they won't hit.

    If his dad has done them before, I would trust them. My father and I replaced the timing belt on my Integra a few years ago. My father isn't a mechanic and neither am I, but we're both pretty handy. We had a Haynes manual purchased at an auto parts store, not really the greatest manual, but it worked. The only issue I had was that the belt I got at Advance Auto Parts didn't fit right. I had to go to the dealer to get the right belt. Also, it can be difficult to work in the tight space beside the engine where the belt is and the job might take more than a day for a novice if there are any problems. So be sure to give them a lot of extra time to avoid stress. Don't expect to be bringing the car over in the morning and driving it home for lunch...     yeah let em do it, by the way you are probably running on borrowed time now, i checked the recommended change interval on the civic and 99% of them said 60- 90K. but your owners manual will say specifically. and yes it is an interference engine, if the belt breaks it will damage the engine, probably big time, so you know you Must change it soon (like yesterday), you knew that already, the job is not too difficult for a good mechanic but can be really tuff for a dumbell mechanic (like me), make sure they check the belt tenshioner (sp) for wear and the crank %26amp; cam seals for oil leakage. many mechanics replace the water pump when doing a timing belt, simply because the operation exsposes the pump for an easy change, have them replace the other belts while they are at it too, alternator, power steering, AC those belts, if they are reasonably good mechanics and pay attention to detail, they arn't likely to muck it up.Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
    Trust your boyfriend and his dad. If he's had plenty of experience, nothing can go wrong with changing the timing belt.

    1.0 12v and 1.2 16v are %26quot;chain cam%26quot; engines, tensioning is done by an automatic tensioner and it shouldn't need looking at for many thousands. In theory.



    You need to keep on top of the oil changes though as the jets that lube the chain can get gungedgangedd lead to chain rattle. So can wear on the tensioner. When it starts rattling, then is the time to check for wear.

    Whoa!! I don't like your friends style. He may well have bent some valves, if they weren't bent already. You didn't mention the engine name, but you can find out online whether it's an interference engine or not. Honda engines rotate Counter-Clockwise!! Turn the engine by hand (a socket on the crank bolt) until the TDC marks align on the crank. Loosen the tensioner and slip the belt off the cam. Rotate the cam until the mark lines up and if it's a distributor model, the rotor points to 1. Have the belt tight on the side opposite the tensioner and release it, turn the crank CCW (Counter) 45 degrees (!/4 turn) and tighten the tensioner. Turn the crank BY HAND 2 complete revolutions until the crank comes up to TDC. Look at the cam marks. If you can't get it to line up perfectly, always advance the cam, never retard it. In your case, the mark on the cam will be to the LEFT of the mark on the valve cover. Don't bother putting the cover or anything else back. Crank the engine and see if it runs well. Shut it right off. If not, check the compression. If it's low or no, you'll need to remove the head and see what's going on. Look at the pistons and valves (with the cam removed) and see if anything is bent or otherwise damaged. If you don't know what your doing. Don't do it.     I like your friend's style. He has no fear. My kind of mechanic. He is probably off by a few teeth.



    Belts break all the time when the car is running - messing up the timing real good. There are proper procedures for each car how to set up the timing.



    He should get a book from the library or search online for the procedure. AutoZone.com has online manuals (a little lacking on pictures). Go thru the procedure step by step carefully knowing that you can't be off by one tooth.

    He should be able to get the mark lined back up ,then pop the distributor cap off,see where the rotor is pointing, then move the 1 spark plug wire around to where the rotor is pointing at on the distributor ,now put the remaining plug wires in firing order from the 1 plug wire.     He has to remove the accessory belts and the top timing belt cover, then loosen the bolt on the tensioner, push it back and re-tighten the bolt. Then he can set the timing belt and finish up as he did before, but without turning clockwise!



    I think he may already have noticed the belt does not want to go on with the marks exactly in TDC position. That seems to be the standard with OHC engines, that the cam(s) hate(s) to sit at TDC. No matter. He has to be sure he pulls the engine through CCW a few revolutions to make sure the belt is right and staying right. Even new Honda tensioners don't seem manly enough to ensure the belt doesn't jump a tooth, and I have had to manually jam the tensioner against the belt and let it rebound before tightening to keep the belt from riding up on the cam sprocket. And of course the belt will jump if turned CW, as he already knows.



    I wouldn't sweat the valves.     Do I have the ability to fix broken timing belt on a 1994 escort (1.9 motor)?

    I am somewhat mechanically inclined... I know I need to support the motor and remove the motor mount which I think all I need to do is remove 2 bolts attached to back of motor and the long bolt that runs through the rubber bushing attached to the frame... (hope that is correct).. My biggest concern is if I am working on it by myself, when I line up the timing sprockets, how do I determine top dead center for the number one cylinder? I know how to line up the crankshaft pulley according to the teeth and the vr sensor, after that I am a bit lost on finding top dead center for the number one cylinder. I have changed timing belts before but not if they had broke while running, I would would just make sure I didn't move any of the pulleys when replacing...     As far as telling if you are at TDC on the end of the compression stroke/beginning of the power stroke, besides lining up the timing marks, you have to make sure that both valves for the 1 cylinder are completely closed. If it were on the end of the exhaust stroke/beginning of the intake stroke, at least one if not both of the valves would be slightly open.

    And I would recommend a new water pump, unless you are sure it has been replaced recently. Also a new tensioner.

    Go to your favorite home depot type store, and buy a very long, thin wooden dowel. Take out the spark plug from the 1 cyl (all of them if you don't want to fight the engine compression). Put the dowel in there. Now when you're rotating the engine you can see the position of the piston by the motion of the dowel.



    Now, some engines have matchmarks for TDC. Not having done a timing belt on your particular engine I'm not sure what the matchmarks look like. And they also may be covered in grime and general engine crap. If you can find them (usually small dimples on the pulleys), line them up with the %26quot;zero%26quot; (or another dimple) on the block.     You need to find out if you have an interference motor before you do anything. Call the dealer. If it is an interference motor you will have bent valves and need a valve job which requires removing the cylinder head.

    If you don't have an interference motor, just set the crankshaft pulley to the TDC mark. Then align the camshaft timing mark. Check all the pulleys to see if they feel dry by spinning them by hand. Replace them if they make noise or don't feel smooth when spun.     Why did you wait so long???? These are an interference fit engine. Ordinarily, a few hand tools and a Haynes manual would have gotten you through this cheaply. Or ALLDATA data base found in many libraries. If you are lucky, you didn't bend a valve. If you are UN-lucky, you will have to remove the head and have a new valve or two installed.

    I recently had my timing belt changed for my Protege, Mazda. After having it changed and one week later, there seems to be a loud belt grinding noise after the car has been driven for at least 15 minutes or so. After the engine is shut off and cools for a hour or so and then restarted, the noise is no longer there, until the car is driven again for at least 15 minutes and the noise then reoccurs. However, when the engine is cool and at idle, I can hear some mildly soft sqeaking noises..... What can possibly be the problem and how serious is this problem? Could my timing belt be too tight? The timing belt, tensioner, and idler controler were all changed already.

    so if anyone had read the question, you would have less bull to read. I had a repeat tentioner failure on a mazda 626. It was hydraulic and did not come from Mazda. Ince I got one from Mazda it never failed again. Is yours hydraulic? If you have the exact same noise now as then, are you sure it isnt the timing cover or another pulley or belt rubbing the timing cover. is it a4 cyl.?

    Check your local chevy dealership and don't waste your MONEY by doing it 10,000 miles early. The change time giving by the manufacture was a conservative number so that people who go over a little bit still will for the most part be ok.     And you try to start your car, you can simply throw away the keys. It's one of the worst things you can have happen to your vehicle. What happen is the %26quot;Timing Belt%26quot; lets the spark plugs know when to fire to push the piston down and create power to move your car. If the belt breaks and you try to turn it over the spark plugs don't know when to fire and will try; hence, siezing your engine solid and will require and complete engine rebuild.



    Now the really crappy reality... It's 700 - 800 beans to have the belt replaced by Honda and they will recommend having the water pump replaced as well, which is included in the above price. Because there is so much involved to replacing the belt you might as well replace the pump at that time. Instead of paying another fortune to replace it later.

    Timing belts generally are due to be changed every 100,000 miles. Im not sure what type of motor you have, but I think its whats called an interfering motor. Basically, if the timing belt breaks, the pistons in the motor start hitting the valves, and all sorts of bad things happen (generally throw away and buy new). The belt is just like anything else, and will wear out. The trans flush should be pretty cheap. If youre going to not do something, dont to the Trans flush, just have the fluid and filter changed. The belt is a lot of labor, but I wouldnt think it would be more then a couple hundred bucks. Check with the dealor, they will give you pretty much the highest price you should be paying, if your shop is cheaper, then go with them.

    Yes it can be replaced by a home mechanic. But given your timing belt fell of, you probably have engine damage. Most of the modern engines are %26quot;interference%26quot; design (meaning it will cause damage when the belt breaks or falls off).



    So you probably have to go see a dealer or an mechanic anyway.

    A reputable aftermarket shop should charge 3-400$. Timing belt is not the place on your car to be cheap, your 1.8t also has a waterpump that is driven by it. VW recomends a T-belt at 105k, in my experience after 80k its time to think about it.     The belt is a tight fit, but not impossible. I'm not familiar with your exact setup, but some cars have an idler pulley that is used to tension the belt. This can be spring loaded or have an adjustment bolt that allows much easier belt installation.



    The only %26quot;trick%26quot; to installing the new belt is making sure the timing is correct. That is the crank and cam(s) pulleys are aligned properly. Check the Chilton or Haynes repair manual for how to set them as there are numerous ways that engine manufacturers use to mark the correct positioning. Most have the ! piston @TDC and the 1 cylinder intake valve(s) just closed. Also the location of the distributor or sensor unit that determines the plug firing must be coordinated so that the 1 plug is ready to fire.



    BTW: Some engines position the water pump so that the timing belt needs to be removed to get at it. (Subaru does this) It is usually a good idea to replace the water pump while everything is apart, rather than having it go bad a week or month later. (I think that's one of Murphy's laws: A part will go bad right after the parts in front of it are replaced!) Water pumps are cheap compared to many other parts. I'd also replace all fan belts as you put the engine back together if they aren't pretty new.     Yes, you can do it yourself, it's not rocket science....but neither is it as simple as replacing a fan belt. If the shop wants $170 for labor, they expect it's going to take professionals several hours to do the job. You don't have to stretch the belt to fit, there should be an adjuster...but you will have to make sure that several timing marks are all lined up with the correct reference marks. This after all is the belt which coordinates all the timing in the engine. The reason the water pump is replaced at the same time is that they have a similar life span to a timing belt, and you're right in there. Replace it now and you'll thank yourself later.

    If your buddy has experience with timing belts, then go ahead and it will be a good learning experience. At least get yourself a shop manual and see what you're getting into. OTOH, the shop has quoted you a fair price.

    Your mechanic was correct..a timing belt does not have to have any visible signs of decay/ wear in order to fail. Every car equipped with a belt has a specific mileage interval assigned by the manufacturer as to when the timing belt should be replaced; It is most commonly 60, 90, or 105 thousand miles. Not all engines have belts; most are chain or even gear driven; these do not require any kind of maintenance beyond regular oil changes.



    As for the two types of engine, they are known as interference,and non-interference. In the interference engine, the valves and pistons are extremely close to each other, and if the belt breaks, or even jumps a tooth, the pistons can/ will bend or even break valves, which requires removal of the cylinder head to repair. Non-interference engines are designed with enough clearance so that if the belt breaks, the pistons cannot make contact with the valves, so no internal damage will occur.

    Unfortunately, interference engines are much more common, especially on import cars. Your mechanic can tell you for sure which type you have.

    Your mechanic isn't being entirely honest with you. Belts don't simply snap all of a sudden after a given amount of time. Stress fractures, and fraying must and will occur before they actually break. Unless of course you live in an area where the temperatures are extremely low, in which case a sudden change in temperature mixed with a high friction ratio could cause the rubber to lose structural integrity and break. Replacing belts every 60-70,000 miles is a general rule of thumb simply because it is easier to remember and saves you if you happened to miss a bad place on the belt during inspection. It all depends on your particular engines orientation. As to your last question, any car can suffer severe damage or simply choke down when a belt breaks. Worst case, your valves drop as the piston is coming up (because without a belt it is now out of sync/time) and damages the valves, which is a major and costly repair. Best case, the fuel/air mixture will simply be so far off that the car chokes down and will not run.     1. Service center with Toyota dealer recommends me to change the serpentine belt and he quotes $135 for it. When I contacted another service center, they said that there were three kind of serpentine belts (one for air conditioning and others for something else) and questioned which one needs to be replaced. But, my toyota dealer says there is only one serpentine belt. Does anyone know how many serpentine belts found in 1998 Toyota corolla LE model? If more than one kind, any idea which one the toyota dealer refers to?

    2. Toyota dealer recommends me to change Timing belt and quotes $350 for it. When I contacted other service center, they said there was no timing belt in 1998 Toyota corolla LE, but it had Timing chain and it didn't have to be replaced in the lifetime of the car. Who is correct?

    A 98 Corolla has a timing chain and a serpentine belt. The belt usually lasts around 60,000 miles or so, although I have had to change them at about 45K at times. Basically, just look at the grooved side of the belt where it goes around one of theh pulleys. If it has cracks running across any of the ribs in the belt, it is time to change it. If not, unless it is very noisy it will go for a while longer. The timing chain is what I call the %26quot;new generation%26quot; of chains (which may date me!). Those chains last roughly forever. It will begin to make a rattling noise especially on start up before it needs to be relaced. It is true that if they break it will cause havok in your engine, but I have seen only one of that style break in 15 years, and they use that style now in Previas, Tacomas, Celicas, Corollas, Tundras, 4Runners, Camrys, and anything else with a chain in it, so I wouldn't worry about it.

    It is time to change it, it is a 1998 car so it is more then 10 years old. More then likely, it has about 200,000 miles on it. I seem to remember it is every 100,000 miles it needs to be replaced.     Your Toyota stealership is just that.. a %26quot;stealership!!%26quot; 1998 Corollas don't have a timing belt- they have a maintenance-free timing chain. In fact, all Corollas after 1997 have the timing CHAIN. I should know. I used to own a 1999 LE- which is the same car. Go elsewhere for service.

    Need more info, make and model of car and engine. I assume you are talking about the tensioner pulley and not the cam pulley. if you broke the cam pulley you have a bigger problem then a timing belt issue. I assume you installed the properly so that the timing was correct? The cam shaft and crank shaft must be in proper time for the engine to run (start).     year make and model would really help. some engines are %26quot;interference engines%26quot; this means when the timing belt beaks it will allow the pistons to hit and bend the valves which will require the cylinder head to be removed an the bent valves replaced.     Please , take apart and try timing it again. Only put the vibration damper back on until you are sure it runs. Then go to dayco.com, they have a good Reference chart to tell if you smacked your valves with your pistons

    what carmen said + make sure you replace the balance shaft belt as well, the left hand shaft should have a mark to line it up and the other can be held in place with a metal rod (screwdriver) inserted on the firewall side of the engine.
