When to change the timing belt on my 2002 acura mdx.?

My mdx has 101k mi. on it. Also, how much should I expect to pay. When to change the timing belt on my 2002 acura mdx.?
Honda / Acura says 105K miles on some of its engines; don't you believe it!

Get it replaced as soon as possible, and every 60K miles after that, no longer.

As to how much it costs, no idea. Not familiar with the MDX, sorry. But however much it costs, that's nothing compared to replacing a ground-up engine. When to change the timing belt on my 2002 acura mdx.?
Just follows your user manual says... I remember it is around 100k - my mdx haven't reach this miles yep.

If you go to an dealer and replace with OEM parts, it will cost you over $1000 with water pump changes. You can find places that will cost you around $600... I guess it depends on how long you plan to keep the car to see if it worths to go to a dealer to do the job. When to change the timing belt on my 2002 acura mdx.?
Depending on the car..but they're usually recommended to be changed at 60k.

The belt itself isn't expensive, but you're probably looking at 2-3 hours labor. When to change the timing belt on my 2002 acura mdx.?
in usa 350 dollars...i guess that abt 450/500 lb

Timing Belt change for a honda civic?

i just got a new car a few months ago and its a 2003 honda civic lx and i think it has almost 90,000 miles on it, most of which i think are highway. when is the timing belt recommended to be changed, i know its probably overdue but what is the %26quot;official number%26quot; and how much longer can i wait to have it changed?Timing Belt change for a honda civic?

honda says 105,000 for a timing belt change.

this is very high. reason is honda wants to make their cars sound like they don't need lotsa maintenance.

I usually recommend 80,000 miles no matter what.

you don't need to goto the dealer for this, any repair shop can do a timing belt job.Timing Belt change for a honda civic?
i have always heard 80,000 miles, and given the fact that it is an interference engine, i would not push my luck. i dont think that freeway or around town makes any difference in this situation.

I changed my waterpump and timing belt, along with all the pulleys and balancer belt. Before my safc II was set in the negatives (-10) and now it wants to run lean all the time and I have to set my safc II in the + (+10) so my question is. Are you sure you lined the timing gears up right before you put the belt on. If they are just one tooth off it will throw your timing all out of whack. A timing gun won't do any good if the belt is not installed properly. Did you do this yourself? • Micra 1.0s 60k timing belt change?

I'm looking at buying a Y reg 01 Nissan Micra 1.0s. The price is pretty cheap at 拢1500 but when i took the car out for a drive i had a look through the Manufacturers manual and saw that they recommend that you change the timing belt at 60k miles and the car has done 61k. and not had it done so far. Is that right?

And also, how much is this going to cost if it definately needs doing?

Or am i buying a potential nightmare?!

    Thanks!Micra 1.0s 60k timing belt change?

I owned a micra and have had several Nissans. The engines are good and sound but you should get the cam belt changed when it is due. If you do not change it and it fails it will ruin the engine. I would say they are great secondhand cars as long as the bodywork is not rusty you will have a sound vehicle. The cost varies from car to car but I would say at least 拢120. If I were you I would use that fact to negotiate the price down a bit.Micra 1.0s 60k timing belt change?
That is a regular service issue. Changing the belt is much cheaper than repairing the valves and or the pistons when the belt fails. Definitely do it at the recommended 60,000 or if you or an Auto Technician check the belt by removing the cover to see if it is worn or loose to decided just how soon. I believe this is also an Interference Motor. Which means, if the Timing Belt is neglected and it breaks, the valves could hit the Piston and the Valves could bend. Then you are looking at a costly repair, and either a new donor head, or a trip to the machine shop. But when you do get this done, definitely do the Water Pump as well, and have the Techs look at the Bearings for Idler Pulleys on your Serpentine Belt, and have the Serpentine Belt replaced as well. All these things (if broken) all have to be taken apart together regardless, and involve the same work, so you should have it all checked and replaced anyway to avoid much worse and more costly repairs down the line. How long until its necessary to change the timing belt on a 99 honda civic ex?
50,000 miles is when I stress to replace all timing belts. Some automakers say 60,000 miles some even has listed 100,000 miles but odds are by 50,000 miles you should either be replacing it or keeping an eye on it.

Like with just about all import engines they are interference engines. Which means if a valve is open which if the engine is running when the belt brakes you will have atleast 2 valves open on a 4 cylinder which would lead to the piston slapping the valve.

When the belt brakes and the piston hits those valves the valve will first punch a hole in the head of the piston requiring the block to be pulled for the bottom end to be taken apart to replace the pistons. The pistons will also bend the valves which will require you to get new valves, new valve guides and possibly new head/heads because odds are that valve stem will be pushed sideways and will cause fractures in the aluminum/cast iron head. How long until its necessary to change the timing belt on a 99 honda civic ex?

should be changed at 100k not 60 k shes lost her mindWhat is the indication that I have to change the timing belt for daihatsu 96 model and how much?
Mileage is the ONLY indicator - timing belt failure will leave you stranded with absolutely no previous symptoms.

Most manufacturers recommend the change at 60,000 miles. Check your owners manual for the maintenance schedule on your particular model to be sure.

    Added: Lost my mind?

    %26quot;The timing belt must be changed every 60,000 miles. Although the California Owner's Manual says 105,000 miles, this is just to satisfy a state requirement that says timing belts should last 100,000 miles or more.%26quot;

    %26quot;The average life of a timing belt is 60,000-90,000 miles. ...%26quot;

Sooooo.....if you want to drive on borrowed time, go ahead, wait for 100,000 miles. It's been my experience that you won't make it.What is the indication that I have to change the timing belt for daihatsu 96 model and how much?
There's really not any usual indication on most vehicles. The exception is if a belt is %26quot;loose%26quot; and jumps a gear tooth. Then you would get a rough idle and rough running engine. If you let the belt break your repair bill will be more than your vehicle is worth if it is an interference engine. Interference means the valves will drop and hit the pistons! Perhaps another person knows if it is an interference engine, most brands are. Cost to replace the belt (and maybe the water pump at the same time) will likely be $350-$650. If the belt breaks, regardless of engine type, you are stuck on the road. Hope this helps! What is the indication that I have to change the timing belt for daihatsu 96 model and how much?
hahahahaha! Oh Sorry! JJVikings08 made me laugh! He is right it should be changed after 100K miles.

    %26quot;shes lost her mind%26quot; Hahahahaha!!!

Anyways, since yours is a 1996 model, i take it, that it probably is over the 100K mile mark. S you should get it changed soon, oh and while you are getting it changed, also get the water pump replaced, since they are both near each other, and if you get them done separately it will cost you twice as much.

That sound good it would not hurt to set it at 20 to 25 lbs. To set the wrench is to loosen the end nut on the handle part then Twist the handle to where the groove on the wrench itself where it says 15 FT lbs. You will notice the handle has a 0 and | | | | 5 | | | | 10 | | | | and so forth...

Line the dial part or handle to the grove on the body of the wrench where it says 15 plus add the dashes to make 18 which is the 3 dash from 0 turning it to the right. It will be 18 in FT lbs. remember to twist the lock nut on the end so the dial does not turn when torquing on the wrench.

When you tighten the bolt and it reaches the ft lbs you set the wrench at it will make a CLICK sound and you can feel it click too.

practice on a wheel lug nut or some other nut to get a feel for it.

You don't want that tension pulley bolt coming loose. I could not find the specs for the torque but I never used a torque wrench when doing a timing belt.

But your Cog type belts do not require much tension for the belt to stay in place.TIMING BELT Im going to change my timing belt in a few days and was wondering if any1 could tell me how to set?
are you sure you are up to this ? very expensive mistakes can be made - you should really have a workshop manual .TIMING BELT Im going to change my timing belt in a few days and was wondering if any1 could tell me how to set?
Get a Haynes manual: You'll need several different torque settings for various nuts %26amp; bolts, as well as a specific procedures for replacing the belt itself.

Your torque wrench should have instructions with it, but usually they're adjusted with a knurled wheel at the end of the handle - the torque setting appears against a mark in a clear 'window' on the handle, or against a mark on a scale at the adjuster.

Seriously, don't mess with the timing unless you are a trained mechanic. You could end up costing yourself a lot of money.Timing belt change on 1997 Honda Accord?
You should have some pretty solid mechanical abilities. I took mine to a shop and had it replaced prior to the mileage reaching 100,000. It cost $300.00, but that also included a couple hoses that need replacing. Well worth it, if your timing belt goes out on you while you are driving, you pretty much are putting in a new motor because, the innards of the motor keep turning until the motor stops, causing warped valves and rod issues.

The cost will vary, depending on who you have do it, and what part of the country you live in.

I just had to chime in to respond to one of the other posters, to say how retarded it would be to drive that car until the belt breaks. It has an interference fit engine. That means that if the belt breaks, you're looking at a HUGE repair bill.

And 105K is a long time for a timing belt to last. I saw a lot of early Escorts break their timing belts at 40K, when Ford said they should last 50K when they built them. Bent valves, damaged pistons, cracked cylinder heads. What a mess. They really took a bath on that, because they were all under warranty yet.

Do i need to change the timing belt on my 1995 ford fiesta? 57k miles, 1.25 engine?

Hey, i know next to nothing about cars, just got my first, a 1995 N reg Ford Fiesta, 1.25 and done 57k miles. Apparently the timing belt needs changing. I've scouted around a few mechanics and a few have even said it wont have a timing belt? Others have mentioned timing chain, and alternator belt? Whats the difference? And should i get it in and changed quick before it fu**s the whole engine up? And most importantly, how much should i be expecting to pay? so i know i'm not getting ripped off...(in the UK). Big cheers for help!!!Do i need to change the timing belt on my 1995 ford fiesta? 57k miles, 1.25 engine?
    ok in order

a 12 year old timing belt may be weak even with the low milage you report. they do degrade with time.

i don't know if it has a belt or chain but its easy to find out. open the hood and look for a sheet metal or plastic belt guard on the front of the engine. [front in this case means the opposite end from the transmission, usually on the right in front wheel drive cars.] under that guard there should be a rubber timing belt belt with tranvsverse grooves in it. it will ride on a large pulley at the top and on the crankshaft at the bottom. a second check would be to open the oil filler cap and look for a camshaft. if you see one you have an overhead cam engine and almost every one made now uses a timing belt. chains are used mostly in single cam V-8 motors. the altenator belt is a single V belt than runs from the crankshaft pulley [ there are usually several stacked on the crank

] to the altenetor and maybe other things like water pump, power steering pump. if it fails the car may be undrivable but no damage usually occures. if you lose the timing belt and you have what is called an interference engine you will total the engine due to the pistons hitting the valves. on a non interference engine nothing will happen except the engine will stop running.

i would have it checked and if needed replace it. cost here in the states is on the order of $50 for parts and $100 labor in my area. it can be a DIY for anyone with some experence.Do i need to change the timing belt on my 1995 ford fiesta? 57k miles, 1.25 engine?
So - is there anyway to know if the timing belt (or timing chain - they do basically the same thing) has been changed prior to now - and when? If not - I'd play it safe and replace it. I bought a for Escort years ago and the timing belt went out when I was driving it and it ended up doing a lot of engine damage and costing me a lot of money.

Sorry - I have no idea what it will cost you these days - but I know that it's cheaper than major engine work.

Good luck.Do i need to change the timing belt on my 1995 ford fiesta? 57k miles, 1.25 engine?
That serpentine belt should be changed at or before 60k miles regardless of any inspection. That is what the normal operation for that part is. It is fancy rubber belt that 'snakes' around the front of the block. I had a 1980s Ford Truck with a Mazda Motor in it, that was weird to discover. I was not amazed when I discovered that Ford had the Tool to released the tensioner spring, made for Ford by Ford for Mazda.

I have no idea what motor is in that vehicle, but 60k is the average for Serpentine Belts, pulleys, gaskets, bushings, bearings. Basically a preventative rebuild to keep a car in running condition.Do i need to change the timing belt on my 1995 ford fiesta? 57k miles, 1.25 engine?
Timing belt is most important and it is a good time to have it changed

Timing belt Vs Timing Chain: They do the same thing but Chain is made of metal like a chain on a bike, and belt is made of nylon (usually for small cars) About $ 70 US

*instalation is highly expensive, but a bad belt can ruin the entire engine

Alternator belt is a small rubber or nylon belt that turns the alternator(generates electricity for battery) usually about 1/2 an inch wide and cost about $15 US not sure in UK but its preaty cheap, the instalation is expensive though

*this one usually squeeqs when bad

I would recomend they check the timing belt to see if its worn

Alternator belt should be easy to change yourself if you want just ask the guy at the auto parts where it is located all you do is take one of and put the other , there is one screw and one tensionerDo i need to change the timing belt on my 1995 ford fiesta? 57k miles, 1.25 engine?

The easy way to tell if it needs changing is going up a steep hill, if you hear a rattling sound while accelerating up it needs a change. A timing belt is usually a chain similar to one on bycicles, its comes as a set from a parts shop, including all Gaskets. Its not a cheap procedure and its one of the most expensive repairs. Thats why people sell their cars before 100 000 kms.

Not bad if you know what you are doing, but reserve a whole day for it. Make sure you replace any idlers because if one of those fails the timing belt is gone. Also, don't even do the job unless you are going to replace the balance shaft belt and tensioner bearing because that is what is more likely to give trouble than the timing belt would. How big of a pain is it to change the timing belt on a 1998 mitsubishi mirage havent done a front wheel drive?

How dangerous is it to drive a honda accord with 140,000 miles with the origonal timing belt?

The 2000 honda accord still runs great, but I havn't gotten around to change the timing belt. I am waiting till I have enough cash to buy the water pump and the belt. But I am WAY over due for the timing belt change. Do you think I shouldn't drive the car?How dangerous is it to drive a honda accord with 140,000 miles with the origonal timing belt?
Get that belt done! Toyota and Honda are the biggest timing belt offenders, but here's the difference. You blow the timing belt on your Toyota, you get towed to the shop and pay for a timing belt replacement. You blow the timing belt on your Honda, you ruin your pistons and valves, so now you're either replacing much of the engine or getting a junkyard engine. The Honda's have what is called an interference engine, which means the pistons crash upward into the heads, damaging internal engine components, the Toyota has a non-interference engine, so the piston stops short of damaging everything. If you completely baby the car while driving, try to keep it running when possible to avoid starting it, and get the freaking timing belt done ASAP, you should be OK, but since its inside the engine, there's no way to know. You might be hanging on by a thread right now or the belt may appear fine. Just get it done, get it done, get it done!!!How dangerous is it to drive a honda accord with 140,000 miles with the origonal timing belt?
It's not dangerous as in the engine is going to explode and kill everybody in the car, but the old timing belt could snap and the engine could stop running at any time. If that happens, the repair bill could for more than just a belt and water pump. If you don't need to drive the car, I'd recommend you wait until you could get the proper maintenance done on it.How dangerous is it to drive a honda accord with 140,000 miles with the origonal timing belt?
Please be careful. I would highly encourage you to get the timing belt replaced ASAP. We own a 1992 Accord with 223K miles. It already had the timing belt changed out once before. We just recently replaced the timing belt yet again, as well as the water pump, belt, etc. Our car is running well right now. If the belt in your Honda breaks, it will cause major damage to the engine. Please do not drive it until you can get it repaired. If you must drive it, drive it gently until you can get it fixed. Good luck, and God bless! How dangerous is it to drive a honda accord with 140,000 miles with the origonal timing belt?
you should be fine until you have enough cash, its actually smarter to do the water pump with timing belt... so yeah its a 2000, not like its a 1994. just drive in the city so that if the timing belt does snap, stop the car!!! so that the engine parts inside dont get f**ked up.

How do you know when to change your car timing belt?

I have a Fiat punto 2002 that wont start. everytime i try starting it, it wont start. It sounds like the fan just switches on. I took it to a garage. They have said the timing belt has gone but i dont see how it is because it has not snapped.

The car mileage is only 28k.How do you know when to change your car timing belt?
i change my belts on every car i buy...yours is missing teath at the bottom....the crank spinns but the reat of the engine stays still...thats not the worst of it..your head/valves could be damaged....How do you know when to change your car timing belt?
You check your owner's manual. Unless something is defective, the belt should be replaced at the manufacturer-specified interval.

Even in the 70s, Fiats had longer timing belt intervals than that. Most modern engines have intervals of at LEAST 60,000 miles, and many are over 100,000.

If your timing belt was out, it would probably do more than %26quot;sound like the fan switches on.%26quot; Depending on what type of engine it has (interference or non-interference) it would either just not work, but should at least turn over, or you'd hear the pistons banging into the valves, pretty much destroying the cylinder head.

Oh, and the timing belt is not a belt that you can see on the outside of the engine. Being so critical to the function and health of the engine, it is encased in its own little cover. Almost every engine that has a timing belt does it like this. You have to actually remove the timing belt cover to see the state of the timing belt. What you're looking at is probably just an alternator, power steering, air conditioning, and possibly fan belt. How do you know when to change your car timing belt?
Take it to a different mechanic.

Maybe when they said it has gone they meant its worn down too much? I don't know. Mine snapped on me in my first car. I was driving home from work in the middle of winter and had to sit in my car for an hour till the tow truck came. I was on the highway but on a bridge thing (overpass?), my car just all of a sudden quit. I was lucky I was at the top though becuase I was able to coast down the rest of the overpass and get off on the offramp.

The only thing though is when it went it snapped and wrecked my pistons or something. So the whole engine had to be replaced.

Man 28k, sounds low for a timing belt. Yea, I'd get a second opinion. Good luck!

Edit: To the first answers comment: %26quot;If the engine WON'T turn over when you turn the key, its a battery, starter or ignition switch problem.%26quot; I don't think this is true, because when mine snapped it was like my whole car just died. Nothing worked when trying to turn it over. How do you know when to change your car timing belt?
Try taking it to another garage if you dont think its a proper estimate. You would have to take the valve cover off and check the valve train and the crank position to see if everything is lined up properly. but first I would: 1)Check ignition with spark tester inline with plug 2)Check fuel injection system by spraying intake with starter fluid, if it trys to run, something is wrong with fuel injection system. How do you know when to change your car timing belt?
The teeth can sheer off the belt, so it isn't snapped but not working.

    Its easy to check.

Take the cam belt cover off (plastic cover)

Turn the engine over, the belt should move as the engine turns over. If it doesn't move when the engine moves, its lost some of its teeth,

Big job to fix as the head may need to come off.

Cam belts should be changed at 50k or 80k or 100k+ it depends on the engine and the type of driving.

    I bet the 28K is 128K on a 2002

If the engine WON'T turn over when you turn the key, its a battery, starter or ignition switch problem. How do you know when to change your car timing belt?
rubber timing belts either wear out by mileage or by age. its only 28k but its almost 7 years old.

Now i dont know why you even mentioned a fan but you must have had it towed to the garage since it would not start. And did you really see the timing belt?? Because it is located behind a metal shroud,,,,it is not the belt that wraps around the various pulleys on the front of the engine. How do you know when to change your car timing belt?

You need to remove the timing belt covers and try turning over the engine with the key. If the cam and the crank both turn, then the belt has not gone. If however when you remove the cover you find that the belt has snapped then its already to late!

Hi there, 3hrs is the book time for changing a timing belt kit on this type of car, I't doesn't mean that if they garage has prior experience changing this type of belt that they will charge you less. The job involves using special tools correctly to lock your crankshaft and camshafts, so that the belt can be removed and a new belt fitted correctly. I would also take this opportunity to advise that when you change a timing belt, any other associated componants are changed too ie timing belt driven water pump and any tensioners as normally these are affected by the un-tensioning and tensioning of the old and new belts.

Hope the helps.I have a 2006 renault megane 1.5dci,can anybody tell me how long to change a timing belt,in hours approx.?

the time quoted by renault is about 3 hours. but to be honest if a garage has changed a few in the past there is no reason why it should take them that long. So at the end of the day a good honest garage would discount any quote they have given if they are interested in doing the work for you, because they will know full well it won't actually take them the 'book time'.I have a 2006 renault megane 1.5dci,can anybody tell me how long to change a timing belt,in hours approx.?
Autodata gives 2.0 hours - this is the system all garages use, so should be 100% accurate.

It should be fairly simple on a tercel. You will have a lot of room to play with due to the small motor. FYI, you will need some basic screwdrivers, ratchet set, and the main thing, rent a harmonic puller from autozone.

How hard is it to change a water pump on a 02 vw golf 2.0.Do i need special tools?do i change the timing belt?

According to the Gates Belts website (link below), you have an interference type engine whose valves and pistons collide causing major engine damage if the timing belt breaks. The belt is scheduled for replacement at 60,000 mile intervals and the water pump is driven off the timing belt. If you do the job yourself, you'll have no warranty on the work done, whereas a shop will give you at least a 90 day/ 4,000 mile warranty on both the parts and labor. That means you get the job done for free if the parts or workmanship fail soon after installation. However the total cost will be about $600, depending on whether the tensioner pulley and what other parts are replaced and whether you go to the dealer or have an independent shop do the work. How hard is it to change a water pump on a 02 vw golf 2.0.Do i need special tools?do i change the timing belt?
If the pump is driven by the timing belt then you should replace belt and water pump together, it is a lot of work to get in there again so do them together. If you're not an advanced shade tree mechanic, take it in, timing belt/pump replacement is a big job, at the very least be sure to have a shop manual to follow. It is on average a 5 hour job, if not done properly you'll have to do it all over again.

You cant see the timing belt. Its behind the front cover. If you are referring to the drive belts, I would replace them if they are in need of changing. The timing belt is a bigger job, should be changed every 90k I believe every car differs though.1993 HONDA CIVIC! Will i need to change the timing belt when changing to a performance underdrive pulley?
I have seldom worked on any hondas, however, the use of underdrive pulleys is old hat in hot rodding. You will undoubtably have to change length of your belt on an accessory drive, but I question your use of an underdrive pulley as being related to a timing belt. Unless both pulleys for crank and cam are changed, it would not be possible for them to stay in time, and changing them both would have no purpose as far as power gain. If I have misunderstood your question, please pardon my interuption. If you are changing an accessory drive that is actually driven from the timing belt(is that actually done on hondas?) then there may be a small change in length, all dependent upon difference of the two diameters and how many degrees of the pulley circle it contacts. Using pi (3.14) times change in diameter divided by the fraction of degrees contacting the pulley should give you the difference in length.1993 HONDA CIVIC! Will i need to change the timing belt when changing to a performance underdrive pulley?
You shouldnt have to mess with the timing chain, but you will have to take off the accessory belts (A/C, power steering, alternator) when changing out the pulley. I would advise you to change the belts if it is necessary, but if your alternator is in working order then dont mess with it. Dont fix what isnt broken.1993 HONDA CIVIC! No you shouldnt have to unless it says so when you get the pulley, u should just need a new belt, they should provide it.1993 HONDA CIVIC! Will i need to change the timing belt when changing to a performance underdrive pulley?

you should be fine. just put your timing marks on the crankshaft, cam shaft and distributor to TDC. then reinstall your timing belt, and turn your engine over by hand to feel if anything is binding. if all is good, start it up. you shouldn't have any problems. if you feel uncomfortable with it, get it towed to a shop.

First you have to determine which engine you have.

You can have a 2.4 4 cyl, or a 3.0 V6. Both use a timing belt, and a belt driven water pump.

On 1994 %26amp; prior models, replace at 60,000 mile intervals. On 1995-96 CA vehicles, replacement at 60,000 mile intervals is recommended but not required. On all other models except 1997-99 Caravan, Town %26amp; Country %26amp; Voyager, replace at 100,000 mile intervals (if not previously replaced). On 1997-98 Caravan %26amp; Voyager models, manufacturer does not recommend a specific maintenance interval. On 1999 Caravan %26amp; Voyager models, inspect at 60.000 miles %26amp; replace if required, then inspect again at 90,000 miles and replace if this was not done previously, then inspect again at 120,000 miles.

The 3.3 and 3.8 V6's use a chain which requires replacement only if broken.

Since the belts have to be removed to gain access to the water pump, it is a convenient time to replace it, the thermostat and do a good coolant flush. When should I change my Timing belt?
yeah your slightly overdue...yes replace the water pump as well.

if it aint broke dont fix it!!When should I change my Timing belt?
Your water pump as little to do with the water pump but you should change the water pump if your coolant isn't running through the car like it should... But your timing belt should be change if it's slipping and your cam shaft isn't pushing the pushrod correctly and your pistons aren't firing in order...When should I change my Timing belt?
Most knowledgeable people will recommend changing the water-pump when changing the timing belt, because it's a relatively cheap part, but a lot of labour to change. Most of the work to change the t-belt is also the same work involved in changing the water-pump on most FWD cars. Change the Water Pump too.

thank youAt how many miles do i have to change the timing belt on my Yaris?
I don't know if my experience with a 1980s' Corolla is applicable, but maybe.

The first recommended change was at 90,000 miles or 120,000 miles, the latter if my memory serves me well. After the first change, Toyota recommends changing it every 60,000 miles. I do the latter (at a big city dealership); however, the local Toyota mechanic has often said that he has never seen any noticeable wear or tear on my timing belt. Nonetheless, I just don't want to take any chances, as I find one significant repair/replacement every 60,000 miles quite acceptable. A Toyota is remarkably troublefree (and may well not leave you stranded until the transmission goes at about 500,000 miles), so the cost of replacing a timing belt every 60,000 miles is inconsequential.

I made a couple of grammatical corrections. At how many miles do i have to change the timing belt on my Yaris?
The 4cyl Toyota Yaris has only been sold in the US since the 2007 model year, and has a timing chain, not a timing belt. My understanding is that previously, the Toyota Echo (4cyl) in the US was the same car as the Yaris in other countries, but even the US 2000-2004 Echo had a timing chain and not a timing belt. There is no prescribed replacement interval for a timing chain. (If it did have a timing belt, for a 1999 or newer the replacement is 90,000 miles or 6 years, whichever occurs first. If older, replace at 60,000 mile intervals.)

Timing belt change-how to find in 1990 bmw?

    Hello all,

I have a 1990 BMW 525 which i bought from a second hand car dealer and he told that he had changed the timing belt. This year I am going to do a service on my car..like changing the distributor rotor, sparkplug change, oil change etc.My dealer told that he had changed the timing belt, but how do i confirm that that he had changed.Any way to find out that....

thanks in advance,Timing belt change-how to find in 1990 bmw?
The only way to tell is to look out for telltale signs of recent activity in the timing belt area (cleaner bolts and screws compared to the others in the engine...etc). Another way is to visiually inspect the belt itself for cracks, but if you could get to that stage, you might as well just replace the belt anyway since there's already a lot of labor involved.

Haynes repair manuals recommend 40,000 miles while Bentley repair manuals recommend 60,000 miles.

Either way, you should never delay changing it out because you have an interference motor, which could cause bent valves, cams and rocker arms when the belt becomes loose or if it snaps.Timing belt change-how to find in 1990 bmw?
Any dealer will do a free inspection, if your dealer has already said he has swapped it out, you can take his word for it or not,

Keep in mind for your car BMW recommends the belt swapped out at 60,000-70,000 so if you have 85,999 miles on your car you can be assured that you have another 30,000 miles left to go.

As evidence, your belt would have broken already from being dry-rotted or your belt would have some serious cracks in it.Timing belt change-how to find in 1990 bmw?
As with all belts, you can check them visually or you can take it to an Auto parts store that offers free inspections of your belts for a better opinionTiming belt change-how to find in 1990 bmw?
While timing belts have a recommended life other things can lead to failure. Over heat, oil leaks, coolant leaks can shorten the life. To check the belt you need to look at it. Does it show wear? Cracks or discoloration? Did the dealer tell at what millage the belt was changed, and did they replace the cam and crank seals %26amp; water pump?Timing belt change-how to find in 1990 bmw?
Cannot. Even tearing out the timing belt cover (which takes about 2 - 3 hours of labor) and belt is visible, there is no way to tell unless your belt is ready to snap. However, if the BMW dealer said the car was serviced, you can trust because all BMW dealer work is required to be logged into a database.

you need a good repair manual on it they only cost about 25 bucks and it will have illustrations and instructions of how to do this one,i agree with the above answer that's a lot to try and type out and if we miss one detail it will cause you to mess up,its not an easy job and if you don't get it back in time right you can damage the engine in it,that's why you need a repair manual on it,good luck.Changing Timing belt on a 2002 Dodge Neon?
Forget the websites invest in a good workshop manual and read first and then follow the instructions

The job is not too difficult but has dire consequenses if you get it wrong. You also need a decent set of tools including a torque wrench.

You need to get the timing exact or you can damage the pistons and valves should they come into contact. Even a bit out will drastically affect the performance.Changing Timing belt on a 2002 Dodge Neon?
There are plenty of tips out there if you search. Somewhat of a pita car to work on.Changing Timing belt on a 2002 Dodge Neon?
Too much information to type out...

As suggested by the first response, invest in a shop manual. It will give you the step-by-step instructions you will need as well as the torque specifications (very important) and the tools required for the job. Replacing the timing belt is a job that needs to be correct the first time you do it as the Neon 2.0L engine is an interference engine. Screw up the timing and the pistons will dry-hump the valves. That is a very expensive mistake to make.Changing Timing belt on a 2002 Dodge Neon?
www.neons.org. Hit the search and you can find it. Timing belts are easy on these, but you will have to remove the passenger side engine mount, the harmonic balancer, alt, and p/s belts. You would need a good 3 jaw puller to remove the balancer, plus a floor jack and jack stands. You will also need to remove the right front wheel to access the timing belt area. Or you can go to 2gn.org to do some research

How much does it cost to change the timing belt on an Acura CL?

Plan on anywhere from $600 to $1,000. When I had it done on my Integra in Minnesota, it was a little over $500. When I had it done to my Protege after we moved to Illinois, Mazda charged me over $900. I don't think it had as much to do with the make of the car as the fact that it's the Chicago area, and the cost of living is higher here.

When you take it in, they will probably suggest you replace the water pump, even if it doesn't need it. DO IT!!! They are right next to each other, and most of the cost is in the labor. If you don't, and the water pump goes out later, you'll probably spend the same amount again in labor to go back in, where if you do it at the same time, it may add another hour to the labor, plus the cost of the part. How much does it cost to change the timing belt on an Acura CL?

Timing belt and water pump change?

I must change the timing belt of my car. I have been told that the water pump must be done too since it is right there. Due to the high price I want to postpone/skip the water pump until the next tune up. What happens if the water pump fails down the road? How long does a water pump last? 120K? My car has 60,000 miles on it. Thank you.Timing belt and water pump change?
I always suggest at same time. Most timing belt jobs are 4-5 hour jobs and all of that has to be removed to replace the water pumpp, which could be in a week a month or a year (roll the dice) it doesn't usually take much if any additional labor to replace the pump when everything else is out of the way usually just the cost of the pump itself. if you wait and say a month later the water pump goes out you would have the expense of the pump AND ALL THE LABOR AGAIN.Timing belt and water pump change?
The reason you are being told to change both at the same time is because the tear down is almost exactly the same to do both of those actions. It's highly recommended that you change both because you are probably gonna pay for 5 hours labour to change the timing belt then you are gonna pay for another 5 hours of labour when you take you car back to change the water pump, whereas had you simply changed the water pump at the same time it would have only added about 45 minutes of labour to the total labour...

Do both at the same time or don't bother doing any till you can afford both!Timing belt and water pump change?
You don't have to renew the water pump. They mention it because it becomes easily accessible during the timing belt replacement. The extra cost should only be the cost of the water pump. So it's often sensible to include the water pump at the same time. If you do it at the next service it will cost you at least the same as you are paying now for the belt job.Timing belt and water pump change?
There is no guarantee on how long the water pump will last, but normally 100,000 miles plus. But that is true of a timing belt too. The water pump has a weep hole at the bottom, visually check for corrosion or rust in that area. If you see some, could be a sign that it is ready to go soon. If not, then do the repairs that you can afford. But why the heck are you changing a timing belt at 60,000 miles.Timing belt and water pump change?

i have a 2000 toyota yaris 1.3sr its done 70,000 miles and is fine no problems but my friend has a 2003 clio that has 60000 miles on it and his belt went and cost him over 3k to fix the damage. when should i change mine i have heard everything from 90000 to 250000 any idea?

thank youAt how many miles should i change my timing belt on my Yaris?
These intervals range from every 60,000 miles to every 105,000 miles, you need to replace your timing belt. If not replaced in time, it may break possibly causing serious engine damage. When a timing belt breaks, the camshaft stops turning leaving some of the valves in the open position. The crankshaft, because it's heavier, continues to rotate by inertia. In an interference engine, this will cause the pistons to strike the valves that left open. This may result in broken or bent valves, damaged pistons, and possibly, destroyed cylinder head.

The damage will be less extensive in a non-interference engine but in either case, the engine will stall, leaving you stranded.

you never know... company recommends a date or mileage that it should be done.. dont mean it will make it til that or cant say how long it will after it.... its only a recommendation and most of the time when a timimng belt or chain breaks it can cause damage to other parts costing more than the belt....really its only up to the driver to decide.. you call a few places and get a price and decide if your ready or wait it outAt how many miles should i change my timing belt on my Yaris?
70,000 milesAt how many miles should i change my timing belt on my Yaris?
100,000 is usually when you should do it - along with the water pump.

A timing belt can go anywhere from 90-250K without breaking (depending greatly on how the car is driven and maintained).

Most modern cars have 'interference' engines (valves and pistons are timed to miss each other), so if the timing belt breaks, or if it jumps time because it has stretched - then it can result in serious damage to the valves, pistons, or both.

Get a quote from the Toyota dealer, it might be expensive - but it's much cheaper than having it fail and destroy the engine.

If it is getting up in miles, and you can't afford to take it to Toyota, then ask around if anyone can suggest a good mechanic, try to get a few quotes. At how many miles should i change my timing belt on my Yaris?

Mechanic question: how to change a timing belt and tensioner on a 97 subaru 2.5 VJ engine?

I'd really appreciate it if someone who knows these engines well could explain step by step how to change the timing belt and tensioner on this engine.

Is there anything that can be done wrong that would cause the tensioner bolt to break?

This is so I can know if the job was done correctly in my car where the tensioner bolt broke 2 1/2 months after a new timing belt and tensioner was installed.

Thanks so much.Mechanic question: how to change a timing belt and tensioner on a 97 subaru 2.5 VJ engine?
If the shop offers any kind of warranty at all - and they should - then the fact that a part they replaced 10 weeks ago broke would be something I would expect to be covered.

The bolt could have been over torqued, or they could have re-used the old bolt instead of the new one supplied with the tensioner - stupid, but it can happen.Mechanic question: how to change a timing belt and tensioner on a 97 subaru 2.5 VJ engine?

timing belts should be changed about every 30,000 miles or so. It can go longer, just feel the belt and make sure the RIBBED part of the belt is not cracking. If it is starting to crack then it needs to be replaced.

the timing belt is usually changed with the water pump since you need to take the water pump off to change the timing belt anyways. How often are you suppose to change the timing belt on a 2002 Honda Accord?
They recommend it be changed at 90,000 miles. Every time you turn that many miles, replace it. While you are in there, change the water pump too while you have access.

Added: Hey hiteck, where did you get the 30,000 miles figure? According to the manual, the interval for United States 1990-93 Accords is 90k miles/6 years, whichever comes first. Definitely no more than 150 to 200 dollars. I know for sure its 300 for a timing chain which involves a lot more work. Make sure you do some research and talk to some car guys before you take it somewhere on where a good place is. Best bet is to find a guy who does side work. How does it cost ( the labor) to change the timing belt on a 1996 Toyota Avalon?
it takes them about 30 minutes to change a belt. the money you pay for labor is the money you're paying not only to the mechanic, but to the salesperson, to the manager, the payroll clerk, electricity, utilities, and any other overhead costs they might have incurred in taking your order. also, the 30 minutes that it takes the mechanic to change your belt, he could be doing other things. like fixing someone else's car. so you're paying for the mechanic to fix your car as opposed to anyone else's.

and the year of the car doesnt matter. the time it takes for the mechanic is going to be about the same. whether it's a 1996 avalon or 2006.

I'm trying to remove the crank pulley bolt so I can change my timing belt.?

I have a 1997 VW Jetta 2 liter and want to change the timing belt. I can not remove the crank pulley bolt even with a 1/2%26quot; impact. Am I turning it the wrong way? Is it clockwise or counter clockwise? The bolt head is a 19 mm 12 point. Any tips on how to remove it would be appreciated. I'm posting this for my hubby.I%26039;m trying to remove the crank pulley bolt so I can change my timing belt.?
Anti clockwise to undo. Jam a power bar and socket on to the chassis and operate the starter.

These are notoriously tight and hard to undoI%26039;m trying to remove the crank pulley bolt so I can change my timing belt.?
If you have a manual transmission, put it in gear, set the parking brake, and use a breaker bar to turn it counter-clockwise as you look at the head of the bolt. If it's an automatic, remove the starter and use a prybar or something similar to lock against the teeth on the flywheel so the crank won't spin... again, turn it counter-clockwise.

Also, spray it with penetrating oil first and let it sit for a while. If you happen to have rust on the threads or the bolt and it snaps in the crank, it's a real pain to fix.I%26039;m trying to remove the crank pulley bolt so I can change my timing belt.?
the threading of the bolt usually depends on the rotation of the motor. I believe if the motor turns clockwise, the bolt loosens counterclockwise, and Viceversa...

i'm not saying to do this...but i used to break them loose on older cars by finding the rotation of the motor, wedging a breaker bar under the control arm accordingly and cranking the motor without the coil plugged in. (with everyone away from that side of the car too!!!)I%26039;m trying to remove the crank pulley bolt so I can change my timing belt.?
If the pulley spins clockwise normally it probably will have counter clockwise threads, this prevents it from spinning out while running. It would be advised to find a shop manual and confirm this.

  • How do I know when to change the timing belt on my Honda Civic?

Its a good idea to have them changed about every 60,000 miles. If you bought the car used and don't know when it was last changed, check to see if there's a plastic removable inspection plate at the top and you can view the belt. Garages charge anywhere from 125 to 350 dollars to replace the belt which most of them will replace your waterpump, too, since it has to come off anyway to get to the belt. If you can afford to do so and again not sure how old the belt is go ahead and get it replaced. How do I know when to change the timing belt on my Honda Civic?

How hard is it to change the timing belt in a 1997 Toyota camry?

It is very hard if you have never done it before. It is surely a skilled job, taking a wheel off, taking off the plastic cover under the wing, having a manual with you, losing the alternator bolts, disconnecting water pump, taking off two pulleys and making mark, marking and losing tensioner, steering belt and what now. So many things, if held up even at one step you will be without a car and any mechanic will come to your place at 4 times the cost. Best is give a mechanic 拢60/70 and collect the car in one hour fully professionally done. How hard is it to change the timing belt in a 1997 Toyota camry?
go to autozone.com sign up (it's free) after that you can look up the car and repair manuel for the timing belt and see whats involvedHow hard is it to change the timing belt in a 1997 Toyota camry?
It's even harder than already described if the timing belt goes around the frame member, which it does on many of the Toyota models. In that case you have to loosen a motor mount and jack the engine up high enough to get the belt around the frame member.

I usually do most things on my car, but this is one that $120 (or 60quid in the UK?) is well worth the investment.
