Do you think I should let my boyfriend & his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?

I've read that if it isn't changed right it can cause a lot more $ in problems. I realize his dad %26amp; him know how to work on cars (his dad used to own a body shop with his father-in-law) %26amp; it'd cost $100 compared to $500-600. But I'm just not sure if it'd be safer to pay more %26amp; have the dealer do it.

What do you think?Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
Given that they're reasonably experienced, you're safer with dad and BF. A dealer mechanic is on the clock and concerned with getting the job done more than getting it right. BF has to worry about not getting any.

Timing belts aren't that hard to change, you just have to take off a lot of crap to get at them. There are timing marks on the pulleys, so as long as you pay attention and take your time to do it right, you're golden.Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
let them. puttin 1 on is nothing!Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
the timing belt is a not that complicated to change. if they have experience working on cars, there should be no problem.Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
If they have experience, knowledge and the correct tools it should be an easy job. I'd let them do it.Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
jus let the boys do it!Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
If you're having second thoughts about it then spend the extra cash and get a certified shop to do it, plus the work would be guaranteedDo you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
that is a huge involved job, that requires special tools, i would just bite the bullet and go to the shop.Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
if you're going to let them change it, make sure you've made it clear that if something happens because they made a mistake, they'll need to pay for the damages.Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
i would have the dealer do it.its best in the long run. if somethings wrong with their work thewy generally replace what they did without charging again. on top of that if its not done right by your bf. then that could lead to some arguments . just my oppinion.Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
If they know what they are doing then I would have them go ahead and do it. If your not so sure, then take it in to get fixed and then you will also have a small warranty with it. If you decide to have a shop do it, just tell the boyfriend and his dad that you didn't want to put them out by having to fix your car.Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
Make sure the buy a Hanes Manual for your vehicle, and are they mecanically inclined??? Have the right tools??? I would do it if I had to and had no money to pay the garage, the belt itself is only about $20... only problem I see, is Honda's are notorious for having an %26quot;interference motor%26quot;, thus there may be other problems like bend valves involved... did it break while it was running.. or is it still intact?Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
is a money thing or i dont think they can thing you decide its your car.... if they think they can why not save the moneyDo you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
Since your not married and he is not out to get your life insurance plan - LET HIM DO IT ! The man is being a great boyfriend (unlike millions of losers) just ck out the relationship section. LOL i would get a gift for his Dad - cook em both a nice dinner with the money saved and go by some clothes. Dude I sound like a chick ?Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
If his dad has done them before, I would trust them. My father and I replaced the timing belt on my Integra a few years ago. My father isn't a mechanic and neither am I, but we're both pretty handy. We had a Haynes manual purchased at an auto parts store, not really the greatest manual, but it worked. The only issue I had was that the belt I got at Advance Auto Parts didn't fit right. I had to go to the dealer to get the right belt. Also, it can be difficult to work in the tight space beside the engine where the belt is and the job might take more than a day for a novice if there are any problems. So be sure to give them a lot of extra time to avoid stress. Don't expect to be bringing the car over in the morning and driving it home for lunch... If you can't afford that kind of uncertainty, take it to the garage :)Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
let him do it..men feel alot better when they can %26quot;take care%26quot; of their significant other...it really isnt that hard of a job..I can do my own and I'm a girl...better yet.. go out there with him and help him...you might learn a thing or two.Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
If they are competant at fixing cars, what's the problem?Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
since it's not broke the belt, LET THEM.if the belt breaks it will most likely bend a vavle or twoDo you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
yeah let em do it, by the way you are probably running on borrowed time now, i checked the recommended change interval on the civic and 99% of them said 60- 90K. but your owners manual will say specifically. and yes it is an interference engine, if the belt breaks it will damage the engine, probably big time, so you know you Must change it soon (like yesterday), you knew that already, the job is not too difficult for a good mechanic but can be really tuff for a dumbell mechanic (like me), make sure they check the belt tenshioner (sp) for wear and the crank %26amp; cam seals for oil leakage. many mechanics replace the water pump when doing a timing belt, simply because the operation exsposes the pump for an easy change, have them replace the other belts while they are at it too, alternator, power steering, AC those belts, if they are reasonably good mechanics and pay attention to detail, they arn't likely to muck it up.Do you think I should let my boyfriend %26amp; his dad change the timing belt in my Honda Civic?
Trust your boyfriend and his dad. If he's had plenty of experience, nothing can go wrong with changing the timing belt.

On the other hand, a dishonest mechanic at the dealership could set you up intentionally to get you to come back in for other repairs after they've already taken $500-600 from you.

It's actually much safer to pay less from people you can trust especially with people who have experience than paying 5 times as much with people who may want to mess with other parts in your car just to stay in business.

Good luck!
