Does anyone know after how many miles do i have to change the timing belt on my 2002 mk4 golf 1.9 GT TDI?

There's a great website for your car, clubtdi.com, which should be mandatory reading for the TDI owner/enthusiast.



They have a whole link (see below) on how to change your timing belt.



In their FAQ they state that the interval for a 2002 is 128,000km (which translates to 80,000 miles). The '02 models got an updated belt and tensioner compared to later models, hence the longer change interval.Does anyone know after how many miles do i have to change the timing belt on my 2002 mk4 golf 1.9 GT TDI?

The timing belt controls the valve and piston timing, if it breaks, valves remain open and the pistons momentum takes it right into the valve ruining the engine. Some engines are not interference engines meaning that won't happen, however Vdubs are interference engines where you will do severe engine damage. I believe VW recommends 60K miles, but 90K is more realistic.Does anyone know after how many miles do i have to change the timing belt on my 2002 mk4 golf 1.9 GT TDI?
It is recommended that the belt be changed before 100,000 miles. When you take it in to get done, keep in mind that there are several seals that will need to be replaced also. It may be worth the expense to replace things like the thermostat at the same time (other components may have to come off, are just as old as the belt and there is no additional labor to instal the new components, only the expense of the additional parts).



VERY IMPORTANT: Your engine is a 'Contact' Engine. When the belt breaks (which could be next week or in 3 years) the valves will stop moving, the pistons will continue to move. When the piston moves to the top of it's stroke it will destroy all the valves that are open. This will effectively destroy your entire engine.
