Just curious because when I got my oil changed, the service guy said he highly recommended it because my car has 105,000 Miles on it. He said it will got bad then I will be screwed, when I said %26quot;no thanks'' to paying the extra $500.00, for the job, he laughes at me. Ironic you posted this... My father has a 1995 Mazda Protege 1.8L, he has gone over 200,000 KM with the original timing belt. I got him to change it finally! It is said that a timing belt should normally be done every 100,000 KM. He paid $250 Canadian for the job and did his water pump too (extra)...

As a rule timing belts should be done any where from 70,000 miles to 100,000. You would just be asking for trouble going much longer than that. I'm not sure about the Protege, but there are 2 different types of engines, an interference and a non-interference. The difference being, in an interference engine if the timing belt lets go, then the pistons WILL smack into the valves. In a non-interference this will NOT happen. My suggestion, don't find out the hard way, get it changed! Now as far as the price on a job like this, what you are paying for is the labor, the belt it self is only going to run you about $50.00. There is a lot involved in changing a timing belt, especially in a front wheel drive car. Shop around for a good price, or find someone you know who can do it. Hope this helps.
