How often should you change a timing belt for 1995 Mazda Protege?

Just curious because when I got my oil changed, the service guy said he highly recommended it because my car has 105,000 Miles on it. He said it will got bad then I will be screwed, when I said %26quot;no thanks'' to paying the extra $500.00, for the job, he laughes at me. So, was he just trying to get some extra cash or was he right? THANKS!!How often should you change a timing belt for 1995 Mazda Protege?
Has it done all those miles on that belt? iff so it wants changing. If it goes it could be bye bye engine. (The rising pistons will come in rapid contact with the descending valves, not nice )How often should you change a timing belt for 1995 Mazda Protege?
Ring your local friendly Mazda dealer and ask how often it should be changed. If you don't know the service history of the car it's best to be on the safe side and get it changed. If it breaks the cost of repairs will be more than the car's worth. How often should you change a timing belt for 1995 Mazda Protege?

Ironic you posted this... My father has a 1995 Mazda Protege 1.8L, he has gone over 200,000 KM with the original timing belt. I got him to change it finally! It is said that a timing belt should normally be done every 100,000 KM. He paid $250 Canadian for the job and did his water pump too (extra)...

great car you have! How often should you change a timing belt for 1995 Mazda Protege?
As a rule timing belts should be done any where from 70,000 miles to 100,000. You would just be asking for trouble going much longer than that. I'm not sure about the Protege, but there are 2 different types of engines, an interference and a non-interference. The difference being, in an interference engine if the timing belt lets go, then the pistons WILL smack into the valves. In a non-interference this will NOT happen. My suggestion, don't find out the hard way, get it changed! Now as far as the price on a job like this, what you are paying for is the labor, the belt it self is only going to run you about $50.00. There is a lot involved in changing a timing belt, especially in a front wheel drive car. Shop around for a good price, or find someone you know who can do it. Hope this helps.

How much trouble is it to change the water pump on a 1996 geo metro 1.3 also the timing belt?

It's no picnic, and when you are done it will still be a '96 geo metro.

Start by getting all of the external stuff out of the way - the hood is tiny so remove it (trust me - it is a lot easier to work on a car with the hood off). Jack it up and put it on stands too.

Remove any accessory junk, coolant overflow, hoses, etc., be very careful with any wiring and connections - then start taking stuff off the engine - alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner compressor (you don't necessarily have to remove them, sometimes you can use zip-ties to hold them up out of the way).

Once you can access the front of the engine, remove the timing belt cover (sometimes easier said than done). I break most of them, because they aren't designed to come off while the engine is in the car (without jacking the engine up and removing a motor mount).

Be ABSOLUTELY SURE to check for timing marks on the crank and cam - if both gears do not have them, then you will need to mark the gears and the block/head so you can put it back into time when you put the new belt on. Failure to do so can cause a lot of wasted time, and could possibly damage the engine.

Turn the engine over (pulling the spark plugs makes this easier to do - and you probably need to inspect those anyway), until it is at 'TDC', meaning that both the crank and the cam timing marks are pointing straight up (the engine might be at a bit of a tilt).

Triple check your timing marks - and then release the tensioner (most people suggest replacing the tensioner along with the timing belt and water pump, but I never have). Remove the old belt, and then remove the water pump.

Install the new water pump - put the new timing belt on, line up your timing marks, and let the tensioner back down.

Cuss when it goes out of time when it tightens up and turns one or both gears. Release it again, and play with the way they are lined up so that when it tightens up that both crank and cam timing marks are EXACTLY lined up. If you put the whole thing back together and it isn't in time, you will be very mad.

Reassemble, and if you did everything right, fire it up!How much trouble is it to change the water pump on a 1996 geo metro 1.3 also the timing belt?
Before you attempt those repairs, I suggest you go and get yourself a repair manual for your car. Some engines are harder and more complicated than others. The manual will give you step-by-step instructions on how to do those and many other repairs. Read the instructions and then decide if it's something you can do or would be better in the hands of a pro.How much trouble is it to change the water pump on a 1996 geo metro 1.3 also the timing belt?
Water pump is very hard. How much trouble is it to change the water pump on a 1996 geo metro 1.3 also the timing belt?
Leave it to the experts, you only need the timing slightly out, and you will wreck the whole valve train, or even the pistons, better to spend $600 than $2500.

All of the 02 sentra models I looked up have engines that use timing chains instead of a timing belt..it shouldn't need replacing until the engine needs to be rebuilt%26gt;When would I need to change the timing belt for my car?
The interval varies by car. Normally it's 80,000 or more. Some cars are a little less. Make sure you have a belt and not a chain because chains don't need replacing unless there's a noticeable difference in the performancee of the car. Look in the service manual, call the dealer and ask, or search the Internet and hope.

any help and suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated to steer me into the right direction!

thank youHow do i change a timing belt on a citroen xantia hdi year 1999?
No special tools are required to do this job, there are some available but they are not really needed. some special knowledge will help. A timing belt replacement is not a difficult or hard job its just a little aukward and it has to be done right.

Access is the main point as its tight to work in. Use tipex or a paint pen to mark the cam and crank pulley, you dont need to worry about the injection pump on a hdi as its a common rail pump that does not need timing up.

You are better buying a cam belt kit so you get the tensioner's and guide pulleys too. Also being a hdi i can safely bet that the water pump is leaking slightly and may as well be replaced while your there.

If your unsure its not really worth the risk, the replacement cost of a cam belt can be as little as a 10th of the cost that it would be to reapir a broken belt or incorrectly fitted one.How do i change a timing belt on a citroen xantia hdi year 1999?

This is a big job on the Xantia HDI. It takes about 4.5 hours and you need 9 special tools to complete the job. My advice is if you are not a confident mechanic and can't get hold of the special tools needed. Forget it, and get a professional to do it. If you get it wrong you could do a lot of damage to the engine. It would cost more than the car is worth to repair.

How costly and difficult is it to change the timing belt on a 1990 escort xr3i (cvh)?

your so far answers are from people who have never seen a modern engine,,,,modern engines are usually packed under the the bonnet so tight that the timing belt is usually impossible to change without removing the radiator first,.

to change it you need to remove the cover and spark plugs so you can turn the engine by hand,it needs setting at (usually 3deg)before top dead centre of the no 1 cylinder, each timing belt is marked with a line,if you see where the line is on the old belt and put the new one in the same place you are ok,,,if you dont then the valves drop as the pistons rise and you have a greatly F***ed engine,,,mechanics set the belt with computers and previously %26quot;strobe%26quot;lights so they dont get it wrong, its time consuming and costly and timing belts should be changed about every 80,ooo miles,or by a saab in future they dont have a timing belt, they use a double%26quot;bicycle%26quot;chain which lasts the life of the carHow costly and difficult is it to change the timing belt on a 1990 escort xr3i (cvh)?
If its a simple belt then a few bucks, you can put it in yourself. If its one of those kind that snakes around everything then tack on a couple of more bucks and consider 1 hour of labor at a reputable shop. How costly and difficult is it to change the timing belt on a 1990 escort xr3i (cvh)?
its a petrol engine and fairly easy to do, BUT i advise you change the water pump at the same time... the Mk 4 was prone to blowing up after the timing belt change... (Its a crap pump) How costly and difficult is it to change the timing belt on a 1990 escort xr3i (cvh)?
Are you refering to the Cam belt (timing belt) or the accesory belt?

Cam belt is the big one under the cover along side the engine top to bottom (ish).

The accesory belt snakes around pulleys and tensioners, Goes to the alternator, water pump etc...

The accesory belt should be simple, relatively cheap belt, and hour to do if you dont minde getting your hands dirty, haines manual will walk you through it.

If its the Cam (timing) belt you mean its not that simple, unless your a very compatent mechanic you rish screwing the engine up for good if you get it a little bit wrong, even one or two teeth out of place can be a killer.. dead.. forever.

    So all in all...

Accesory (known as fan) belt - worth a go if you dont mind getting dirty and a few quid for the belt from halfords and a haines manual and a socket set.

Cam Belt - competant mechanic who knows what hes doing - costs the money, but if its done wrong the cars a gonna, and to be honest a 1990 plate xr3i isnt worth jack with a knackered engine after the cams been killed. How costly and difficult is it to change the timing belt on a 1990 escort xr3i (cvh)?
Piece of pi*s 20 quid for a belt engine at TDC and about 45 minutes and your doneHow costly and difficult is it to change the timing belt on a 1990 escort xr3i (cvh)?
It will take about 2 hours labour time in a garage (with the correct equipment) If you attempt to do it at home, without the correct equipment then it will take a lot longer.

May I recomment that you fit a cambelt kit rather than just a belt, as with a kit you get the pulley and bearing (which also wear).

Don't guess. Look it up in your car's maintenance manual. Also check the online Gates belt replacement guide below to see if you have an %26quot;interference%26quot; type engine that suffers major damage if the belt breaks. If you don't have an interference engine, you can just keep driving until the belt breaks and then get it fixed. It may never break.

You can call the dealer and ask for the Service Dept. and ask them the appropriate mileage for your model. For my '87 Honda it was 60,000 mi., but later models specify 90,000. It finally broke at 110,000 mi., costing $1500 back in 1992.

    At many auto parts stores you can buy a Haynes or Chilton's do-it-yourself manual for your model car, with step-by-step instructions, service intervals for belts, filters, etc. and basic explanations at the beginning of each chapter. If it is not in stock, you can order it online by searching on %26quot;auto repair manuals%26quot; on Yahoo search. In the front is a section on %26quot;Troubleshooting%26quot; that guides you step-by-step to find causes of most engine malfunctions based on the car's symptoms. Whether you do the work yourself or not, it helps you make informed decisions and not be taken advantage of, and to not feel so %26quot;in the dark.%26quot;

db667089 says: you can check http://www.alldatadiy.com. For about the same price as a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual, you can have online access (for a whole year) to model specific info for your particular vehicle. This is the same info that repair shops use. They have great wiring schematics/diagrams.

Also, for about $15 for a one-month subscription, you can get the factory repair manual, downloadable (careful! Mine was about 500 pages!) or viewable, at http://eAutoRepair.com.

Also, many people recommend autozone.com's free online manuals.

How often should I change my timing belt? 92 Accord?

I have a 1992 Honda Accord with 210,000 miles on it. (I know, that's ALOT.) I haven't changed the timing belt since I bought it at 165,000 miles. What else should I get done along with the timing belt and what's a reasonable price range to pay a mechanic to get all this done? How often should I change my timing belt? 92 Accord?
a cars timing belt should be changed every 90,000 to 100,000 miles. if you have not done yet you should get the tranny fluid and filter changed, wires, plugs, cap and rotor, oil, and check the accsessory belts for wear.

basicly you should get a good tune up done. this is all pretty easy to do your self but if you cannot. this would probably be a 300.00 dollar job around me(upstate NY area) get a haynes book from your local parts store and it will help you do it your self. but if you dont know alot about cars leave the timing belt to the pros. How often should I change my timing belt? 92 Accord?

I'm pretty sure you have a 2.2 litre engine and it should be changed every 100 000 km (not sure in miles). When you do change the belt you should also change the water pump along with the crank, cam, and oil pump seal since they are prone to leak and your half way there already. Theres no sense in doing the job twice. I dont know the maintenance history of your vehicles but with that many miles though might want to think of doing a tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter etc.). Price for the timing belt %26amp; water pump should run you about $600.00 and tune up could run you about $350.00.

I assume you have a Acura? Acura/Honda engines are interfrence type engines, so maintaining you belt is of the upmost of importance, other wise you will have a very expensive engine repair. 60,000 miles is good rule of thumb for Honda/Acura models

For the record, Honda engines are almost all interference engines, as are (mainly) those from BMW, Hyundai, Isuzu, Kia, Nissan, Porsche, Volkswagen and Volvo. Most, but certainly not all, timing-belt-equipped engines from Ford, Lexus, Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota are non-interference engine. How many miles before changing timing belt on a car?

More than likely you have a problem with the variable cam timing system, not advancing cam timing when you accelerate. The Zetec DOES have variable timing, that is why there is a big VCT logo stamped on the valve cover, the posts below are untrue. I would suggest having it looked at by a professional. This engine requires special timing procedures, there are no cam sprocket keyways or marks, a special tool is inserted in the end of the cams and another tool is screwed into the side of the block to time crankshaft to correct position. How do you change the timing belt on Ford Couture 1998?
Most likely its a hard rubber belt, and from what you said, I think it broke, which is probably why you can't find it. It goes around the wheels, usually in the front of the engine, it has to turn the crank, which is connected to your main engine, and the alternater, which supplies the electrical power to the plugs, among other things, and you might have an Air Conditioner, so there might be two wheels, maybe even three. If it is indeed a timing belt, then that might be made of metal, but I've seen them made of rubber. If you have all the meters you can fix it, but if you don't, just have a mechanic come take a look at it.How do you change the timing belt on Ford Couture 1998?
Since I don't believe the Mazda/Zetec 4 cyl has variable cam timing it sounds like you have the SVT with the 2.5 V-6. That thing is quite an experience to service. As long as it is still running the timing belt is NOT broken, however it may be on it's way out, and you do NOT want that to let go altogether. If the belt has slipped a tooth or two it will make a dog out of it. And it may fool the ECM into thinking it's it's a problem with the variable as it detects an out of expected range condition. I would consult a dealer, or at least buy a manual that covers this model specifically. And there is special tools needed to set the timing properly. How do you change the timing belt on Ford Couture 1998?
There is Variable Cam timing on all 2.0 DOHC's made after 1997 (if the car was a 1998 model)

If you have a MIL with that code, I'd recommend what yugie says 100% and bring it to a shop (preferably ones like a dealer or who ain't afraid of those motors as some independants are.. at least in my area) Also there are special tools as he said and even those familiar with the engine have problems at times (as it requires removing a motor mount and supporting the engine with a holding fixture)

You could have belt problems, but I've seen more problems causing codes from lack of oil changes casuing blockages and finally seezing of the VCT..

get it researched and get it done right...How do you change the timing belt on Ford Couture 1998?
Well, it's not variable cam timing exactly...it's a hydraulic damper on the 2nd cam. It's a real pain. You should take it to the ford dealership and let them fix it as they have all of the special tools required. good luck.

This is more work than usual. You need the belt kit and also some correct tools.

I'd rather you send to the shop if you are not familiar with the timing points.

To remove the belt, you have to remove the obstructing components around the engine first b4 you can reach the timing belt casing.

I have pretty basic automotive skills and a few tools. Is there anything special that i should know? Do i need any special tools that the average backyard mechanic might not have? How hard is it to change the timing belt on a 93 Saturn?
first purchase a shop manual for this car as there several procedures that Saturn uses that are different from most everyone else. sl/sc engines do not have timing belts they are chain driven[granted it is not much more than a bicycle chain] but if it breaks the cyl. head will have to come off for valve replacement and guide repairs both twin cam and single cam engines are interference fit [valves collide with pistons] if the timing cover is to be removed it is sealed with R.T.V.sealant and surfaces must be chemically clean upon reassembly to prevent oil leakage. there is a tool available to align the geroter type oil pump and should be obtained as this part of the job with engine in the car can be tricky. [SA9104E] if chain is to be replaced you must also install new tensioner and guide rails as they will be worn out or broken up. NOTE rebuilt sl engines [single cam] are rather inexpensive from Saturn if your body and interior are still in good shape you may be money ahead to replace the engine especially if you know that valves are bent. this is an awkward engine to remove[sub-frame comes out with engine and trans] and should only be done on a lift. hope i helped and use caution jacking and blocking,[ you can only be dead once.] and good luck

dealer recommendations are 50,000 for both belts serpentine you can get away with timing belt you always want to do before it breaks (around fifty thousand miles or so ) because if it brakes you are looking at bent valves and head problems which would be alot more expensive than changing the belt as a preventative maintenance itemHow often do i need to change the timing belt and serpentine belt on a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica?
The serpentine belt runs power steering air conditioner compressor water pump and probably some thing els I'm forgeting. It should be inspected every time you change the oil. If it looks cracked it should be replaced. With 43000 miles I would replace the belt. The timing belt is another story. It should last a very long time. At least 100,000 miles. If you are not a mechanic I don't recomend doing this your self. But most manufactuers do not recomend a timing belt change untill after 100,000 miles.

How long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?

I don't know how many miles or the exact year. I think it's early to mid 1990's. It's my boyfriend's car and he's thinking of changing it on its own. I just want to know how long that might take. How long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?
I own a shop, and build many engines. A good experienced mechanic will take about six - eight hours. Some engines have belts, while others have chains, it just depends on which engine you are talking about. I know I may get some flack about how long it takes, and what the book calls for, but If a person does one, then one must consider the tool thing. How is he going to remove the damper from the crankshaft? Sometimes they will break, even using the correct gear puller on them. Some have a tensioner that must be replaced in them, so this job can turn into a nightmare for a backyard mechanic sometimes. Tell your BF to go purchase a %26quot;Haynes Repair Manual%26quot; from the parts store %26quot;before%26quot; he tries to tackle the job, or he may end up with a blown engine on his hands.

    Part 2:

Many people on here over look the fact; the answers thing is world wide, and they are assuming you are in the USA. Like I said it depends on the engine as to the chain, or belt thing. The chains use a different type of tensioner. It has what is known as a wear strip on the tensioner, and if this is worn it will have to be replaced. It's not worth getting in a fight with your BF over %26quot;its a belt, or its a chain%26quot;! If it's his car, then let him work on it, and don't worry about %26quot;how long%26quot; it will take to do the job because; once he gets started on it, he will see it's a job he doesn't need to do, and that will be the end of that. Sounds like he wants to be a mechanic, and what better way for him to get started? Giving your BF some space may do more for your relationship than he will for the car. I think once he see's what he is getting in to, he will forget about changing it. One can love a puppy, but hold it too hard, and squeeze it to death.

Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!How long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?
as long as the mechanic feels it takes. How long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?
How experienced is your boy friend with mechanics? It is a six hour job if you know what you are doing. First thing to do before he starts tearing into the car is to find true top center on the number one cylinder. That is the compression stroke of the cylinder. Once that is established you will be able to remove the radiator and the water pump and hoses. Remove the valve cover where the number 1 cylinder is and watch the valve spring open and close on the number 1 cylinder. Make certain that it is the intake valve not the exhaust valve. Remove the timing cover and look at the posistion of the dot on the large gear. That is the gear on the top. Double check that it is on the compression stroke of the number 1 cylinder.

Line up the two dots on the new timing chain in the middle facing each other on the gears. Rotate the engine by hand until the dot on the large gear is at the very top in alignment with the lower gear. That is actual top dead center on the number 1 cylinder. Double check your work. Rotate the engine once again and watch the intake valve open then close. The dot on the large gear should be in alignment in the middle with the dots facing each other. After that rotate the engine until the dot is at the exact top in alignment with the lower dot. Replace the timing cover and accessories. This isn't really a job that I would tackle in my driveway. It would take 4 or 5 hours if you are familiar with changing timing chains. On this particular engine, the oil filter adapter housing/pressure regulator is bolted to the side of the front cover in front of the R/S inner tripod joint. You must remove the R/S axle to access it.

I don't think you're looking at the timing belt.

The belt you see from the outside is the serpentine belt, which powers all the accessories (water pump, alternator, power steering, air conditioner). Look somewhere in the engine bay for a routing diagram... one part will have an arrow showing how to rotate it out for the tensioner.

    It's usually just a 13 or 15mm socket you'd use.

The timing belt is inside the engine, which powers the camshafts. If that's really the belt you need to replace, you must have a shop do it -- you will not be able to re-time it yourself and you risk damaging the engine. How do i change a timing belt on a 2004 huyndai sonata?

Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?

I've never had a vehicle long enough to need a belt, so I don't know how reliable a timing belt is, but I have 89k on it and plan on doing a wp at the same time; should I safely be able to take it to 90k without a problem? I know that the recommended interval for this engine is 90k, but I believe it is an interference engine. Opinions? Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?
Change the belt! Particularly since it is an interference engine. Timing belts are relatively durable, but unlike timing chains, they were not designed to last the entire life of your car. Belts warp and tear over time.

I had a timing belt go out on my previous car (17 year old Toyota with over 165k on the odometer at the time). Luckily it was a free-wheeling (non-interference) engine and there was no valve damage. However, I was stranded on the side of the road, had to pay for towing, and wasn't able to make it to work that day because of it. If the belt is expected to last 90,000 miles, I would personally probably change it every 85,000 just to be safe. You wouldn't run a car on almost-bald tires, would you?

Also, change the water pump at the same time. Might as well since you will be in there anyway.

Better safe than sorry, I always say. I find Toyotas to be extremely reliable, but even the most reliable engines will fail if not properly maintained and cared for. 1,000 miles may not make much of a difference, but all it takes is a stroke of bad luck to screw up a perfectly good engine. No sense in procrastinating.

Best of luck. Take care of that truck and it will take care of you. There's no telling how long it will last you if you treat it right. Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?
Do what the dealer says--if it says 90--its 90---89 is a thousand off--one crummy month--do it and stop playing around. Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?
Recommendation? The timing chain on my car is supposed to be changed every 150,000 miles... I'm at ~305,500 on the original chain. Of course I inspect it every year when I adjust the valves, but it's still in great shape. Check the belt to make sure it's not loose, cracking, or lost its rubbery feel. If it seems okay, go ahead and wait till 90k miles if that's what's recommended. Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?
ive driven cars 50k past their recomended belt change....of course i dident care about those cars,my advice is change itIs there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?
If it was me, I would just go ahead and change it at 89k. I would kick myself in the *** if I decided to hold off and the belt broke. Broken timing belt=sending the pistons up into the valves=very bad news and lots of money for repairs. This is just my humble opinion, do what you and your wallet allows you too.Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?
Any time you have this kind of decision to make ask what is your risk vs reward

    Risk = broken timing belt

Reward = one month of time

Whether you get it at 89K or 90K miles, are you going to hold it for another 90K? If not then you'll only do one change so then then just get it now.

    ===

My Audi is recommended for 90K. But everybody is screaming about timing belts breaking as low as 70K. So I had it change at 60K miles. I figure I would have to do it sooner or later, and I don't plan on holding the car till 120K (another 60K). So either way I would only do 1 change so why risk riding it for so long?

    ===

Besides how dumb are you going to feel if the belt broke so close to your change period (especially after asking yourself this question)?

Keep the paper work. My brother's timing belt broke few hundred mile out because the %26quot;pro%26quot; made it too tight.

Good Luck.Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?
I'm not big up on cars now a days but i do own a 1974 Chevy Nova. When I bought it I dug straight in to the engine to find out anything that may have looked strange. I didn't notice any Thing until about the 5th time i drove it when i smelt something strange. I pulled over and popped the hood to find MY timing chain unwrapped and gnarled around the alternator. This was not a good thing. It was easily replaceable. Although it is almost 35 years old I new right when I got it to replace the belts for ever thing. What I think would be a helpful bit of information is how long you personally have had this vehicle. Oh and to answer your question. Yes you should change your timing belt. In my past I find that if I ask questions about something (especially cars) its more than likely that it is a yes :) besides it never hurts to replace something. Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?
The recommended mileage has a safety factor build in so you are very safe going to 90K, I would not go too much over that.

How do I change the timing belt on my 1990 Honda Civic?

Any experts? I'm good with cars but, I have never changed a timing belt?

Can you explain in detail how to do it?

thanksHow do I change the timing belt on my 1990 Honda Civic?
    1) get some 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, sockets and wrenches. and a 1/16%26quot; allen wrench, small bench vice.

    2) disconnect battery + and tape a rag on it.

2.1) remove power steering pump and set aside. this can usually be done without disconnecting lines.

    2.2) remove alternator.

    3) turn engine with socket on crank (17mm or 19mm) until timing marks are t.d.c.

    4) remove timing cover (10mm socket) needed for this should be 8 or 10 small bolts.

    5) dont forget the 2 at the oil pan connection below (12mm socket)remove crank pulleys (17mm socket)

    6) once covers are off locate tensioner and insert 1/16%26quot; allen wrench in hole on side of tensioner this will save lots of grief later. and then remove. (12mm socket)

    7) on the valve sprockets there will be a dimple that you line up with a notch on top of cyl head usually at 12:00 position.

    8) remove timing belt.

    9) reverse order to re assemble.

    10) oh darn the allen wrench wont fit because belt is too streched or broken! (no worries, compress in small vise and put allen wrench in make sure that you put it in the correct side or you'll have a problem when you go to remove it after the new belt is on)

    11) just for future reference get yourself a Clymers auto manual. about $20 but worth it.

    12) also i'd replace your water pump while you have it apart because that is a pain to get to.

How do I and what is the best way to change a timing belt in a 94 Ford Escort LX 1.9L.?

I was driving it when it broke. Not sure if I did any other damage internally to the motor but what is the best way to find out after I replace the belt? How do I and what is the best way to change a timing belt in a 94 Ford Escort LX 1.9L.?
You can breathe a sigh of relief because your particular car's engine is NOT an interference engine, meaning the valves will NOT touch the pistons if it goes out of time. Anybody who posts, telling you otherwise, is full of S***. Even more good news is that it is also VERY easy to replace on your particular car if you are somewhat skilled. Any place you take it to, should not charge you any more than 3 hours of labour to do the repair. Any more than that, they are ripping you off. The belt itself, is also very inexpensive, even from the Ford dealer. Are you going to attempt to replace it yourself? If so, the sizes for the fasteners are 17mm for the engine mount fasteners, mostly 10mm for the splash guards underneath, as well as the fasteners that secure the hoses up top in the engine compartment,13mm for the belt tensioner bolt, 19mm for the crank pulley, and I think two 11 or 10mm nuts that hold the timing cover. Hope this helps. How do I and what is the best way to change a timing belt in a 94 Ford Escort LX 1.9L.?
If it broke while driving, there will be residue under the crank sprocket. You will need to take the pass. side front tire off. Take the serpantine belt pulley off of the crank and then take the cover off to get all of the trash out of the sprocket. Then put it on TDC, then put your cam in time. Then you can put the belt on. Loosen the pulley on the water pump all of the way. When you put the belt on, tighten up the idler on the water pump, but not too tight. It will shorten the life of the belt if it's too tight. If it's too tight the motor will make a whirrr but it won't be damaging. You can get more performance if you advance your cam 1 tooth. Good luck.

  • How do i know when to change the timing belt?

i have an Acura 3.2 TL, when i bought it, it has 90 000 km on it. Now it has 217 000 km. I never did the timing belt before. Do i have to do it? or did the previous owner already changed it already? How do i know when to change the timing belt?
On most overhead cam engines if the belt breaks it will do major damage to the engine because the valves will hit the pistons. Check the owners manuel for the recomended times to change. When in doubt change it anyway, it will be a lot cheaper than a new engine.

If you are mechanically inclined get a repair manuel and change it yourself. Check the timing belt idler for wear, if it goes out it will ruin the belt. On most engines there are other parts that you may want to replace at the same time because of the labor involved in getting to them. Pretty much if you need to ask, it may very easily be beyond your abilities.

With that said, here's my advice.

The Probe was built by Ford between 1988 to 1997. It was a collaboration between Ford and Mazda built on the Mazda GD platform. It shares many parts with the Mazda MX-6. It is also an old car so I understand why you would want to do it yourself instead of paying a mechanic several hundred dollars.

First, get the exact year, make, model, transmission, and engine for this car.

Go to the Auto Zone website. They have an excellent Do It Yourself section. You can have online access to many service manuals for free. You can not download the manuals. However you can print any sections you will need. You must register to access this section. Registration is free. I have never received any SPAM by registering.

You should study your downloaded pages closely before you proceed to see if you are getting in over your head.

    Some additional advice.

A little organization will go a long way.

Get some 1 quart and 1 gallon zip lock bags, generic will do. Get a roll of 2 inch masking tape. Get a sharpie. Every time you remove a part put it and any fasteners and any hardware in a zip lock bag and label it with your sharpie. If the part is too big for a zip lock bag, put only the loose parts in the bag.

Label every electrical connector, vacuum line, fluid line, etc, with masking tape and a sharpie

Most people have access to a digital camera. Before you start take several pictures from different angles of the engine. With each major component you remove take a new set of pictures. These pictures can be very helpful later on if you forget how a part goes back on.How would i change a timing belt in a car?
If you need to ask that question on Yahoo answers, then you are not qualified to do it. Take it to a shop. Trust me!

It would be a good idea to change the belt any time you do work of this nature. Don't throw it away though, keep it in the trunk. My old man once saved several hours by having his old one in the trunk of his '78 Monte. Just replaced it on the spot and was on his way.

Do you have to remove the engine to change a timing belt on a 2000 toyota tacoma?

I was told that Tocoma timing belts had to be changed around 90k before they broke, damaging the engine. Is this even true? And how much trouble is it to do it yourself given mechanic experience?Do you have to remove the engine to change a timing belt on a 2000 toyota tacoma?
DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF. Seriously, I think your Tocoma should have the 3.4 liter V6, which I have in my 2002 4Runner. Its a big production to do it. I had it done at the dealer. Good plan, right? Guess what - After driving about 150 miles, it fell off! They didn't tighten the crank shaft properly (those were the words of the mechanic I took it too near where it died, as well as the dealer, after they checked it out). Well, too bad for the dealer, they had to come pick it up (140 miles door to door each way for them) and then they did have to yank the engine out to fix the mess.

Its an expensive service at the dealer (about $500, if I remember correctly), but you can probably get your local mechanic to do it for less.Do you have to remove the engine to change a timing belt on a 2000 toyota tacoma?
I have changed the timing belt on a 91 Toyota Camry, we didn't have to remove the engine but it was a big mess. You can order or buy the book at parts stores such as O'Reiley's or AutoZone, the book will tell you.

If you have the maintenence book, it's step by step. I had never changed one before, but I did it with the book, and a little help from family members. I think it is true about damaging the engine. IF you can't afford the labor for the fix (which IS expensive), buy the book for $15 and do it yourself :)

This is a major maintenance I got to do and I'd like more information on it.

How important is it to do it early, versus being 10k to 30k over recommended mileage?

Was it fixed right away or did it need adjustments afterwards?

How did the car feel with the new timing belt?

Did you select a particular brand of a timing belt?

What other repairs did you do simultaneously to cut down on cost?

That should keep you busy for a hot minute dear answerer! What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza?
Depending on the climate that the car is driven in , I would say that the timing belt should be replaced no later than 90,000 miles. This is to prevent having a timing belt failure that could cause more damage... Especially on a 2.5 DOHC engine, I believe that those are considered %26quot;interference%26quot; engines and if the belt brakes during running, you will most likely bend several valves and that requires cylinder head repair...

There is a possibility that the water pump is driven by the timing belt and if so the labor would be less to replace the pump at the same time as the timing belt as compared to doing it at a different date by itself...

As far as adjustments, the timing belt has a self adjust feature and should not require adjustment..

For Subarus, the maintenance schedule recommends replacing the timing belt at 105,000 miles.

This is not something to skimp on. Is it going to fail exactly at 105k? Not likely. Is it worth risking your engine? Your call. If the timing belt breaks, you will be looking at new cylinder heads and a engine rebuild. Your car isn't going to feel any different with a new timing belt, unless your timing happened to be off beforehand. This is just a wear item that needs to be replaced. There's no %26quot;adjustments%26quot; unless you screw up the timing. There's really no benefit to going to anything other than the OEM belt, unless you just like the peace of mind a kevlar belt might give you. You'll also want to replace the water pump, the oil pump, timing belt tensioner, and idler pulleys while you're in there.

I don't consider this the easiest task for the average shadetree mechanic, so depending on your skill level, you might want to consider going to a mechanic for this particular maintenance. What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza?
It is very important to have the timing belt changed. If it breaks while driving it could damage your engine. Take it to the dealer they will do it right. Follow that maintenance schedule in your manual that is all you need to do. Subaru will warranty the parts for 1 year. If within the one year that car is damaged due to say a faulty part that was installed during a service Subaru covers that. No other garage will do thatWhat was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza?
Timing belt replacement is recommended for cars with 60K miles (for 1997 and older cars) ...or at 90K miles for 1998 cars and newer) When a timing belt breaks, your engine stops. That is why it should be done before that risk occurs.

How bad is it to change the timing belt on a 1999 hyundai accent?

1999 hyundai accent. 1.5 L. I realize its a big job no matter what. Im wondering how bad? Like do you deep to pull the motor? Or perhaps the front clip? Or maybe the passenger side fender. Im sure i can do the belt job. Just dont want to do more work than needed, like I dont want to fight with it all day just to find out I needed to pull the motor in the beginning. Thanks in advanceHow bad is it to change the timing belt on a 1999 hyundai accent?
You don't really have to pull the engine out. It is a SOHC engine and it doesn't look that bad. It is a perfect engine to start with as a beginner. I started like everybody from scratch and now I know more than back then. I would advise you to either buy a technical manual for this car or get someone to supervise you (just in case) otherwise, should something come up you might be in for the whole day if not longer. The timing belt is located on the pass side towards the right front wheel. You have a lot of component to remove before you get to it including the engine mount. To remove the mount you have to somehow suspend the engine or support it on a jack (do not put the jack on the oil pan, find a solid point to support the power train). Also, it is important to mark the belt and line - up the top with the bottom of the engine. You have to find the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys. Lining-up the engine has to start from TDC point.

Overhaul, not an easy job but at the same token its something that could be accomplished (with a little supervision).

Good luck and have fun.How bad is it to change the timing belt on a 1999 hyundai accent?
Replacing the belt is no more difficult then on most cars. Now, getting at the thing, that's the fun part. All the belts and brackets have to come off the front of the engine and the balancer has to be removed. Then you have to support the front of the engine (passenger side) and remove the motor mount. Get a Haynes manual. It will give you some idea of what your up against. I would also recommend you replace the water pump and the idler pulleys while your in there. Once you start to dig in you will understand why I say that. You don't want to have to do that job in between belt replacements.

timing belt is no easy matter, its a 3 hour job atleast for a well tuned mechanic. get a mechanic to do it for you. one **** up and your done. i know i did this to my eclipse.

How do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?

how do you know its time to change a timing belt on a 2006 Suzuki forenza with 34 miles on it???? What are the signs that its time for a new timing beltHow do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?
There are no warning signs. Just follow this advice from Suzuki:

The Suzuki Forenza Maintenance Schedule suggests inspecting it at 30,000 mile intervals and replacing it at 60,000 mile intervals.

This car has an interference engine. That means that if the timing belt breaks the engine will suffer severe internal damage and will likely have to be replaced. Replacing the timing belt is rather expensive, but doing so may save you an engine.....

You are not only supposed to check it at 30,000, but it may need to be adjusted. The belt can get loose after it has stretched and it needs to be tightened back up.How do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?
It needs to be looked at 30,000 miles and replace at 60,000 miles. Your other belt that runs the fan,AC,and other things should be replace at the same time as they have to take it off to replace the timing belt and could save your some labor costs. Cracked, chiped,or some loose treads are a good sign but not always. A good mechic can tell you if its is time and you are looking at a few hundred bucks to have it done. If you have only 34 miles on your car for a 06 then you got a good deal then. How do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?
There are no signs. It just goes in a second. I'm pretty sure you have an 'interference' type engine. Most people do. That means when the timing belt fails, the engine will have major damage and may need replacement.

Every car owner lives with this so don't get too excited. Look in your car manual and be sure the timing belt is replaced exactly at the mileage stated. Not sooner and not later. Also have the water pump and belts replaced at the same time. That's done because they need replacement around the same time as the timing belt and it's cheaper to get the extras done while they have things apart. How do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?
Check your owners manual. Sometimes a busted timing belt can damage valves. My 03 neon is 84 months or around 100,000 miles. 30,000 is not right for any car. That's way too soon. My mechanic looked up info on my car.How do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?
Timing belts are to be replaced every 30,000 miles to keep the valve train working right. How do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?
it will tell you in your service guide and handbook, if not, research on google or wikpedia, engines vary and range from 30,000 to 78,000.

I want to get a 2003 toyota celica. It has 63800..is the timing belt okay?the owner has nver had problems with itAfter how many miles should you change a timing belt on a toyota?
    Hi,

a 2003 Celica actually has a timing chain, not a belt. Timing belts were used up until the 1999 model when the switch was made for the 2000 and up models.

A timing chain is not replaced unless there is substantial engine wear/damage that causes the chain to become damaged. It is self-adjusting unit, you do not need to do anything with it.

If you have other maintenance concerns, check the maintenance logbook and owner's manual that came with the Celica or call a local Toyota dealership and ask to speak directly with the parts or service departments on service intervals. They should be able to provide you (at possibly a small cost) with a maintenance logbook for at least up to 100,000 miles if the Celica is missing it's logbook.

Good luck. After how many miles should you change a timing belt on a toyota?
Usually the timing belt is replaced at the 60,000 to 100,000 mile mark. Check your maintenance schedule in the owner's manual to see what Toyota recommends. After how many miles should you change a timing belt on a toyota?
usually between 40k and 60k miles.

    Hi

the 1.3 and 1.6 petrol engines, and the 2.0 diesel engines, are all interference engines, so I would suggest that you have the timing belt changed as soon as possible if any of these engines are fitted to your car.

The 1.3 and 1.6 petrol engines should take no longer than 2 hours to replace the timing belt, and the 2.0 diesel engine no longer than 3 hours.

Just for the record, its city driving that places the most strain on the belt. Long journeys at a constant respectable speed place less strain. How long can my car run without changing timing belt?

A car will run until the timing belt gives out. After that there is nothing to sync the camshaft with the crankshaft and the vehicle will be dead until the belt is replaced.

This is one of these jobs that requires knowledge and skill if you have never done this job or seen it done then i wouldn't recommend doing it, but a good place to start is the local library or maybe search on the Internet. How do u change the timing belt on a 1995 eclipse?
Either buy a book, or go to the library and see if they have a book.

If you've never done this kind of job before, it can be tricky finding the cam and crank alignment marks and where they are supposed to be pointing to.

If the water pump is driven off this belt, it can also be a good idea to change it, especially if the car is at the 120,000 mile mark.

How do you change a timing belt on a 2001 dodge stratus?

i have a 2001 dodge stratus and the timing belt broke, 1 how difficult is it to change? 2 should the water pump also be replaced too?How do you change a timing belt on a 2001 dodge stratus?
you need to replace the timing belt with the tension-er ,they make timing kit that you buy that comes with everything needed to do this with, and you need a good repair manual, because it will explain this job real good and will also give you illustrated pictures of how its done, and its not easy to do on that car,if it has the 2.4 in it you in for big job,i did one a while back and it takes all day as fast as you can work to get this one done and back together and running again, and there a real pain to get back in time also, there's to many marks to line up that you could easily get of without pics of how its done, get a good haynes repair manual they offer the best pics and advice on how to do this one,and you need to replace the water pump as well while you got it off, good luck. How do you change a timing belt on a 2001 dodge stratus?
On some, most, you have to remove the engine to replace the timing belt. On some cars you do not. I don't believe you have to on your Dodge.

One thing you need to keep in mind and watch for. When some cars break a timing belt, it also can cause internal damage to your car, like a broken valve.

There are 2 types of engines and they are called %26quot;Interference%26quot; and %26quot;Non-interference%26quot;. An engine designated as an %26quot;Interference%26quot; engine, there is not sufficient clearance between some engine parts, so when the timing belt brakes, you can usually expect internal problems as well.

Here is a list of engine that ARE Interference engines to see if yours is listed: 2.0 DOHC (Double Over-Head Cam), 2.4 SOHC and DHOC, 2.5 V-6, 3.0 DOHC and 3.2 DOHC. If you have one of those engines, expect internal damage.

Should your engine have to be removed to replace the timing belt, it will cost you around $1,000. Hard to quote a price from different states. If you have internal damage, it could mean a new engine.

If you have a Non-interference engine and you are able to replace it yourself, yest, replace the Water Pump. If I had the engine out, I probably would also change the oil pump. An oil pump that goes out down the highway will ruin your engine before you can get stopped.

If the engine has to be pulled and you take it to a dealer, and you have a Non-interference engine, let him know that you are aware of what you are talking about. Don't want him to feed you garbage. How do you change a timing belt on a 2001 dodge stratus?
The chrysler 2.4 DOHC motor isn't an interference motor. Not sure if the SOHC 2.4, 2.7, or SOHC 3.0 used in stratus' are.

I would change the waterpump along with the timing belt tensioner.

For example, I swapped a 96 Stratus 2.4 motor into my neon. The motor had 36k and prone to failure headgasket. So I installed an updated headgasket. A year later, I had to replace the waterpump. It would have been alot easier had I done it while the motor was still on the stand.

Here is a good link on the best timing belt tensioner for the Chrysler I4 motors. http://forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?f=

I know money can be tight for people. This is one of those times that being cheap can cost you more in the long run.

This job is tough. You need a strong puller for the crank pulley. Probably need some heat to help. To help time the motor, make a tool to lock the cams in place. There are holes in the cam just for this.

In my neon, it would have been faster and easier to remove the motor. But I'm experienced enough to have the motor out/in of the car within a few hours.

I had an original one changed at 80,000 miles. There are no signs. I would not exceed 80,000 miles for the original belt. It's not worth taking the risk. The manufacturer's recommended interval is 60,000 miles. How often do you need to change a timing belt for a 2001 mitsubishi galant?

Check your owners manual, but most need to be done @ 60K. It's best to have this done by the dealer. Any failure, or amateur error will kill your engine. Hi i have a 1997 toyota corolla , how much to change the timing belt ? and do you they have to replace the water pump at the same time?Cost to change timing belt?
    Vman:

The response by Urban and Bill S capture the basics pretty well. However, it is incorrect to state that a chain is used for a 97 Corolla, because it uses a fabric belt (drives double overhead cams).

On this model year (both engine sizes), the timing belt drives the water pump. It takes about 45 minutes more to replace the pump when doing the belt. This includes draining the cooling system and refilling, and cleaning the area where the pump is inserted into the block - must be perfectly clean.

I recommend replacing both, because the new pump should last until the next belt change. This is good preventive maintenance. If the pump fails, the belt gets contaminated from coolant and must be replaced.

Cost (in San Jose, CA) are approx: labor for belt and pump $225, pump (OEM) $50, belt set $50 (includes idler pulley), coolant $12, valve cover gasket set $25, crankshaft and cam shaft seals, $15., sealant $4. You can pick the items you want!

The 97 Toy is a great car and should run at least 300K miles with proper maintenance. See below url for more info.

about 700 bucks...do the water pump also...the reason is you have to remove the radiator belts etc to change a waterpunp if it goes bad ...you don't want to have this procedure done twice in a year are so..maintenance books also recommends this procedureCost to change timing belt?
You should replace the water pump at the same time, but you don't absolutley have to. To answer the first part of your question, it depends on where you go to have the timing belt changed. A dealership, obviously, will charge you more than a mechanic. The total $700 to $1500, unless you know someone who'll do it for you.Cost to change timing belt?
we charge 259.00 for parts and labor and i would recommend doing the water pump also will save you money and labor in the future if you plan on keeping the car .and i do recommend taking it to the dealer we do them everyday , if you take it to the garage down the street it could cost you more because they don't know what there doing and could mess things up.Cost to change timing belt?
they dont have to replace the water pump at the same time but if you want it done it would be best to do them together. Many people get the serpentine and timing belt mixed up. the serpentine is cheap and you can do yourself. the timing belt, well actually a timing chain is very exspensive.

How do you change a timing belt on a 2001 Mazda Millenia?

I am looking at changing the timing belt in my Mazda. I am in the military and have access to a automotive hobby shop where I can access tools and lifts needed to do the work. I am wondering how hard it is to do this job and how long it will take. Any information would be great thanks. How do you change a timing belt on a 2001 Mazda Millenia?
what motor? 2.5 is way easier than the 2.3. i have never done a 2.5, but if it is a 2.3, here are some pointers. you will have to pull the rt wheel, and splash shield. i also pull the motor mount, and the upper radiator hose, which means draining the coolant. this will give you clearance to remove the auto belt tensioners. ahh, the auto tensioners. there are 2. BUT WAIT-before pulling the tensioners/belts, MAKE SURE you loosen the bolt/nuts for the water pump pulley AND the p/s pump pulley. otherwise, you will have to get a really good strap wrench, and do a LOT of cussing. long extensions, and swivel head sockets are a big help, especially when removing the tensioners, and the plastic cover. of course, the motor will have to be supported, and around this time, you will probably notice that the motor mounts are fubar. they are liquid filled, and only last about 60k. dont get the ebay ones, they are NOT liquid filled, and the motor will sit too high. the hood will hit. ask me how i know. you will need a really good auto tensioner tool. the tensioners are spring loaded, and you have to relieve the tension to get the 2 serp belts off/on. if you try it with a box end, it will take 2 strong men and a boy, and there just aint much clearance in there. the motor will have to be tilted up and down several times to get at stuff. you will need a really good impact to get the bolt on the harmonic balancer. my impact is 600 ft/lbs rev torque, and it barely breaks it loose the first time. if your motor has been in the rust belt, i would first try to pull the harmonic balancer, because it will be ON there. if you cannot pull the balancer, you cannot remove the covers, and you cannot get to the timing belt. that is critical. even if it has not been in the rust belt, it is hard to remove. you may want to get a slide hammer kit to pull it off. the covers are held on with 6mm bolts, and you will need long extensions and a swivel socket to get at them, or really tiny hands and double jointed arms. you should also change out the tensioner, water pump, and pulleys. be prepared with cam/crank seals, too. however, if you need to change cam seals, that is a HUGE job. the whole intake has to come off.

some of this info also applies to the 2.5.

now the good news. mazda motors are non interference. the belt is nitrile, and mazda recommends changing it at 105k. i have seen/pulled belts at over 180k that look new. the water pumps seem to last a very long time, and the seals seem to be very good. unless you have a leak, or a bad water pump, i would let it go to 200k. if it breaks, all it will do is leave you stranded, there will not be any motor damage. How do you change a timing belt on a 2001 Mazda Millenia?
It depends on what is in the way... Since it's a transverse or %26quot;sideways%26quot; mounted engine, it could be pretty difficult. It's probably going to involve taking off some bolts or nuts that are hard to get to without removing other parts, but in the case of a timing belt, you don't usually have a choice. You just have to change it. You might be able to get away with just removing wheel well covers and the passenger side front wheel (depending on which side the timing belt is on). If you have any problems, get a factory service manual for that year and model from your local mazda/ford dealer. If you don't have access to one of these usually expensive manuals, go with second best and get a Haynes or Chilton manual for this car usually available at any auto parts store... Good luck.
